Hello! Welcome to Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge. Each week she will post an image grabbed off the internet and challenge bloggers to write a flash fiction piece or a poem inspired by the image. There are no style or word limits.
The image is a vintage photo of a young boy sitting at a table and looking mischievously at a whole turkey on a platter garnished with lettuce and tomatoes. The boy wears a suit jacket, dress shirt and tie, and his hands are folded and placed on the table. An empty dinner plate, a smaller plate with a dinner roll on it, and a full glass of milk are in front of him.
The perfect meal and table settings, everything ready for Thanksgiving, just needed the guests…………. who were late.
Billy was bored, hungry, and impatient.
He hated having to dress up. Stuffed shirts and a tie made him a kindred spirit to this poor bird, equally stuffed and tied, the ‘cologne’ of stuffing and cranberry sauce teasing his nostrils along with roasted chestnuts and crispy potatoes.
It was torture sitting here, waiting, as serving dishes were put before him and he was told emphatically ‘Not to touch!’
Sneaking a hand down by his side, he felt a familiar presence.
Keeping his expression neutral, his fingers hovered around the side of the turkey, found purchase and then gave a little tug.
Sadly someone under the table got too excited, leapt up quickly and the whole lot went on the floor.
Billy and his co-conspirator made a run for it………. but not before scooping up their prize and escaping to his bedroom to dine in grease and peace!

Dogs and tasty turkeys is definitely a Thanksgiving issue. We lost turkeys to dogs a couple of times, but in our case it was counter surfing dogs. They got no help from little boys. It was a fun story.
Thanks Thomas.
I always used to cook my Christmas turkey overnight, so would have two dogs toasty warm in the kitchen watching ‘TV’ when I came down in the morning.
I took the bird out of the oven and pushed it right back against the wall then went upstairs to shower and dress. When I came down the shepherd was sitting on her bed looking very innocent and the collie had a tell tale drumstick sticking out of his mouth. The bone had come out clean so the bird was intact otherwise and I knew the collie wasn’t guilty as he couldn’t reach because he was only a puppy. The shepherd had given him the bone and pretended it was all his fault!
Oh it was so sweet of the German Shepherd to share with the little Collie. It is a heartwarming story. In our case we lost the Turkeys entirely. Once it was our Labrador and the other time it was the Leonberger dog. It was not much left in each case so we through out the remainder and ate the condiments.
My dog loves turkey and would have been in on the sneaky taste and mad dash. A fun take on the image, Di. The poor kid does look like he wants dinner to get served. 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks Diana. Maya will have a traditional Christmas dinner next month as we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is Thursday, the day after our UK Budget, which everyone is dreading here!
I don’t know why I thought you were in the US. Usually I guess correctly. Lol. I hope the budget news is better than expected.
It doesn’t look good to be honest. I don’t think she can put a positive spin on anything from all the speculations and ‘leaks’ of what’s in store. Pensioners will suffer, as well as those working to save towards their pensions who may well think why bother when they are going to be heavily taxed on something they had already been taxed on. What annoys me most is how much Hubby and I went without to make our old age ‘comfortable’ which is now in jeopardy. We shall see what is unveiled tomorrow.
It seems that Western Civilization is facing a reckoning. Here, it’s the huge wealth gap that’s impoverishing so many people. We’ve become a feudal society. I’m sorry that you’re facing similar challenges.
I agree. Property prices are ridiculous, taxes are bleeding workers and pensioners alike, and descendants of those who are asset rich but cash poor are in the line of fire with inheritance taxes.
oh, oh Billy and his doggy are going to be in such trouble Di – great story😃
Thanks Ange
Oh! They are in big big trouble!!!
Probably!
I think assuredly – at least they would be in my house!!
Oh no! He will have to answer for this later
hehe. Hope the dog gets off though!
I hope so too.
Dear, oh dear! I dread to think what happened next!
One very plump and stuffed Billy, plus a contented dog!
That’s the way we used to dress up for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, and a bunch of ther holidays when we were kids….
We used to dress up for Christmas Day and I used to attend Sunday School so it was Sunday Best. I had school clothes which I changed for playing clothes when I got home, and Sunday Best. I always seemed to grow out of the Sunday Best before they wore out!
We went to Catholic school, so we wore jackets and ties every day, so it was no big deal. We wore the school clothes out pretty fast.
Lol! I love this Di! 😀
Thanks Carol Anne. Was Nitro cheeky at the table?
Such a cute story!
Thanks Lisa.
