Wreath – Image by KL Caley
For visually challenged writers, the image shows a stone building with two large wooden doors, hung upon which is an impressive wreath.
Jon had invited Ellie to meet his parents over the Christmas holidays.
They had been dating for well over a year, but circumstances had prevented them getting together, though he knew they would love Ellie on sight, just as he had.
Ellie was a little nervous, but like everything else, took things in her stride.
The house was much as she expected, and the wreath on the front door a very welcome sight as she could remember her own parents hanging one as a sign that a warm welcome and a hot meal was waiting inside for someone less fortunate.
The door suddenly flew open and she was embraced by a bear of a man then fussed over by the woman directly behind him.
‘Ellie! At last we meet! Welcome, welcome. Come inside.’
The wonderful aroma of roast turkey, bacon and stuffing filled the hall as they were ushered into the lounge and given flutes of champagne.
‘A toast!’ Jon’s father bellowed, ‘to our new daughter!’
‘DAD!!!’
Flustered, the older man looked surprised.
‘What? What have I said?’
Ellie smiled and looped her arm through Jon’s.
‘He hasn’t asked me yet.’ she said.
Jon put his spare hand in his pocket and pulled out a small box.
‘I hadn’t actually anticipated an audience, but will you ma…………..’
She kissed him.
‘A toast! To my future in-laws……………..’
You wrote a sweet story here, Di.
