I asked earlier if you could remember what you were doing when JFK was shot on this day in 1963.
I was 7, and as the day was a Friday, it would have been a school day, so that’s about as much as I can remember.
However, I can remember being allowed to stay up and watch the moon landing on July 20th 1969. My parents and sister were glued to the television in awe.
On 16th August 1977, I was reading in bed when it was announced on Radio Luxembourg that Elvis Presley had died. I cannot remember the book, but all adverts were cancelled and only Elvis records played for the remainder of their air time.
On September 11th 2001, I was working in the finance department of an American Bank when the planes hit the World Trade Centre. Everyone in our building was in shock as we gathered round the TV in the social room. If ever there was a example of working together as a team and stepping up to the mark, then our guys in IT and every other department did just that.
On 8th September 2022 Hubby and I were at home when news of the ill health of our Queen was announced. We tuned in to youtube regarding coverage of that and the events leading up to the announcement of her death at 6.30pm.
It was the end of an era as she was the only monarch we had known, having ruled for 70 years and making history as our longest reigning monarch.
We watched the funeral on Sky News on Monday 19th September.
I can remember all these events too. Of course we are much of an age. I would also add 8 December 1980, the day John Lennon was shot. Another day I remember clearly what I was doing when I heard the news.
I had recently left my first husband when that happened. and was back at home with my parents.
We share all those landmarks ๐๐
We do indeed Willow.

I remember when JFK was assassinated – mostly that it was the first time I’d seen my mother cry. She was dusting in preparation for Thanksgiving while the radio played. Then the music stopped and the announcement was made and she stood stock still and just wept. I didn’t understand the significance of the news (I was 5) but I do remember that while we were visiting my grandparents we watched the funeral on TV… it was a very somber holiday that year.
Thanks for sharing Val.
I hadn’t thought about it being close to Thanksgiving weekend. How sad.
I was too young to remember what I was doing when JFK was shot and I’m wracking my brain to remember where and what I was doing regarding other events like that.
I’ve just remembered (thanks to your reply) that my brother and I were asked to play as many Elvis Presley singles at a pub disco we were booked to play the day after he died. People were bringing in their own.
It was the end of an era.
I remember the day JFK was shot for it was the day I first wrote a rhyme. I was a Cub getting ready to do a show in our Methodist church hall when it was announced. For info, this is how it went,

โDo your best.โ
Not bad for a nine year old, pity I havenโt got any better.
For 9, it’s brilliant. Thanks for commenting.
August 31, 1997 – The death of Princess Diana.
As soon as the news hit the airwaves, my family was glued to the TV for the rest of the day. It was as if she was the princess of my country.
My MIL told us, or should I say, she shouted it at me in her kitchen because we didn’t know. We watched the funeral and I am still in awe with all those flowers. There were similar tributes for our Queen too and all those Paddington Bears……………
As for September 11th, 2001, I was in my college on that day. I didn’t found out about the incident until I returned home.
It was a shocking day
