Throwback Thursday #61 – Costumes

Maggie’s in the driving seat again this week for Throwback Thursday. You can find out more and join in by clicking the link below

We don’t celebrate Halloween, but trick or treat was becoming more popular some years ago so we had a bowl of sweets and candies at the ready just in case.

The last time I dressed up in a costume was for a fancy dress party I hosted in the 1980s and I was a serving wench. It was quite a success until ex-partner had too much to drink and put his fist through the glass panel in the back door.

As a kid though, we used to dress up and had our favourite outfits.

Mine was a long black skirt and a mustard coloured crocheted blouse. I wish I still had it as it was very me!!
I was in a school play in my last year of Junior School (1967) and wore the bridesmaid dress I wore when my brother got married in 1965. I was Mrs Fezziwigg in A Christmas Carol and the lad who played Scrooge was totally brilliant in the role.
When Hubby and I were first married we would go on camping holidays a lot and one year visited Morwellham Quay. We were able to dress up in clothes befitting of the time and apparently would have been considered well off as we owned hats! One of the staff took our picture and we had several copies made for the family for Christmas that year. We still have ours and it’s here in the lounge.

These days I am not one for dressing up at all. The last time I wore a frock was for my niece’s wedding in July 2017 and I haven’t worn it since.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Our friends used to host a Halloween party every year – they had themes. One year (I’m going to date myself) the theme was Twin Peaks. I went as the sheriff’s wife and Sparky was the psychologist (with glasses with a red and a blue lens)! Another year the theme was Wizard of Oz – I was Glenda the Good Witch of the North and Sparky was the Wicked Witch of the West! They were lots of fun but we haven’t dressed up for a very long time!

I always wanted to dress as a serving wench simply because I loved the costume. Mrs. Fezziwigg would have been a good character to play (if I ever did theater).

I don’t celebrate halloween either! I did trick or treat as a kid though. Xx

    • Never did trick or treat but we had candy ready for the kids when we were in our first house as they all dressed up and were escorted by parents or older siblings who waited at the gates. It was quite lovely.

Thanks for joining in Di. Making costumes out of old clothes became a fun challenge for me. As long as I could be comfortable, I was happy.
