Scam Alert: Government Grant

I received a text message yesterday from Gov-UK saying I was entitled to a £400 energy discount grant and to apply, go to a listed link.

The majority of households in the UK are all entitled to this grant as agreed when Rishi Sunak was Chancellor.  The media has been full of it and other Cost of Living  grants that are now filtering through the system, and the key word in my text was ‘apply’.
In most cases, one does not have to apply as payments are automatic, especially for those already on benefits, so I was immediately on my guard.

I sent an email to our energy supplier to ask if I had to apply for the grant, and how it would be processed to our energy account over the next six months (October thru March 2023).
The reply I received confirmed the text was not from the energy company, I did not have to apply for the grant, and the payments would be automatically credited to our account as from next month (October).

MY TEXT MESSAGE WAS MORE THAN LIKELY A SCAM.
PLEASE BE WARY OF SIMILAR TEXTS OR EMAILS AND CONTACT YOUR ENERGY SUPPLIER RATHER THAN CLICK ON UNKNOWN LINKS WHICH COULD BE ASKING FOR YOUR BANK DETAILS. IF YOU PAY BY DIRECT DEBIT, THE COMPANY ALREADY HAS YOUR DETAILS AND PAYMENTS WILL BE MADE TO YOUR ENERGY ACCOUNT, NOT YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. SIMILARLY, IF YOU ARE ENTITLED TO ANY OF THE OTHER GRANTS THE GOVERNMENT HAS OFFERED FOR THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS AS WELL AS HELP WITH YOUR ENERGY BILLS, THE NECESSARY GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT ALREADY HAVE YOUR DETAILS. YOU SHOULD NOT AND DO NOT NEED TO DISCLOSE THEM TO A THIRD PARTY.

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

    • We’ve had several text messages about parcels and deliveries recently. It is a worry that someone will get caught especially as there are so many grants in the offing just now.

  3. Nope, Not Pam says:

Scammers are working the numbers. If I get anything like this I look up the number of my provider on an old bill and call them. Better safe than sorry
