Dog class this morning and it was a rush to get there as our new essential oil diffuser failed and we were scrabbling around for receipts so that we can take it back.
There were 8 in the class, four labs, and three other puppies as well as Maya. Having not had time to walk her or have ten throws of the gonk in the morning, she was hyper and sadly only wanted to play. This made things difficult to control and although she did some things OK, trying to get her to do something off lead was a BIG MISTAKE and she went off like a rocket. Recall? What’s that. It was embarrassing.
However, she was not the only one. The five month old fox terrier (not a Schnauzer as I’d originally thought) was also having a bad day and would not do anything it was told, spending most of the lesson on its hind legs. Even our trainer couldn’t get him to walk nicely on the lead, and that is a first for us to witness.
Play time at the end was good though and all of the dogs, puppies as well, played lovely together, except the chocolate lab which was again removed from the field for this part as it’s reactive and can be unpredictable with other dogs, especially if they’re excited.
There are no classes now until 16th October.
We are hoping to concentrate on commands such as sit, stay, wait, leave, round and ‘here’ in the interim. We will have to find something she simply cannot resist to even begin to encourage recall. Even the dehydrated tripe and chicken was of no interest today. It is always because she is so easily distracted and that anticipated light bulb moment, when everything is supposed to click in her head, gets further and further away.
Take care and keep safe everyone.
