Saturday Swapit #25

Welcome to another Saturday Swapit where you can air your dietary laundry with no guilt or fear of repercussion.
To join in you can either leave a comment below or write a post on your own blog creating a pingback to this one then leave a link to it in the comments.
Diets are a bugbear and sometimes we just need to let off steam when things are going off the rails.

DISCLAIMER:
I am not, nor do I claim to be, a professional dietician, nutritionist or diet programme consultant.
I rejoined SW in May 2019 and have managed to stay within my target parameters since August 2019.

Saturday Swapit is not intended as a diet programme, and anyone who wants or needs to lose serious weight should consult a medical professional or their GP.

This week I’m talking about over confidence and familiarity.  As a target member, I am following a regime of 2 A options and 2 B options daily, with double syn days twice a week (well, sort of)

I’m the first to hold my hand up as I have become complacent and a little lackadaisical in my routine insomuch as guesstimates rather than actuals, and losing track of things eaten.
In the recent heatwave, I have been drinking more tea or coffee to keep cool, and as I like it with milk, have far exceeded my daily 350ml of skimmed milk allowance which is always one of my A options . I have therefore addressed that by keeping a two litre bottle of water in the fridge and drinking that instead of extra cuppas.
I have also seen the doctor about swelling in my ankles and legs, which she says is more than likely to be fluid retention, so I am now on a short course of diuretics which may cause weight loss. I’m not getting my hopes up on that, but if the swelling goes down following extra visits to the loo, then that has to be good.

I am quite partial to cheese and crackers for my final meal and usually opt for Ryvita as they come in individual packs of 4, each pack being a B option. The cheese is a bit iffy. I like my cheddar and allowed 30g as an A option. That is not very much when I convert it to ounces and it is just over an ounce!

In comparison, I can opt for 4 of the low fat cheese triangles as an A option instead which pairs nicely with my Ryvita, so throw in some cherry tomatoes (speed food) and I’m behaving myself by playing by the rules.
I am also allowed 40g of certain cereals as a B option, and judge it by how far it comes up the bowl. WRONG!
Not all cereals are the same bulk, so I’ve been slipping up there too.
Some fat free yogurts attract syns (see last week’s post on sugars) so again I’ve been caught out, especially the flavoured ones.

The thing is, when you’re doing the same thing every day, you’re on automatic pilot and think you’re doing everything right when in fact your hand has slipped a little more than once, or you’ve simply forgotten what you’ve already had. I still keep my food diary, but I’ve got lazy with that as well, making my entries in the evenings rather than at meal times while everything is fresh in my head (and stomach).
So a slap on the wrist and a kick up the butt for me, and hopefully things should start to level out again.
I have been lucky to keep in target, but it’s close, so I really need to get back in the groove, weigh what I’m supposed to for extras and get my act together. SW are removing the choice of text in weight figures from July and I should now attend class or go on-line to keep my membership active. With Covid on our doorstep (literally as we have discovered 2 people who have had it in our road over the past couple of weeks, plus our Vet has gone down with it too), I am still unhappy about groups of people I don’t know in close proximity, no matter what precautions are being taken.  It’s not clear how the latter works for target members, but if I have to let my membership lapse, then it’s even more important to get things back on an even keel now.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

I’ve been really tired this week and breaking the rules constantly, only bonus is I’ve increased my walks. So far they’ve offset each other, but, like you, I know I’m going to have to tow the line again

I discovered that my favorite snack (animal crackers) went from 150 cal. per serving of 16 to 200 cal. for 12! I was very upset. But now that I know I won’t be buying them again! But I’ve been having them for years and I don’t know when this change was made – that is complacency! I’m now reading every label. And trying to eat more fruits and vegetables since they are all coming into season and are less expensive than they’ve been (especially the stuff from the garden)!

    • Fruit here is on the rise again. I bought some fresh apricots today for less than £1 and they are delicious, but won’t keep long. Will help with the fibre issue though!!
