The Way

For the visually challenged reader, this image shows a wrought iron gate with the words “the way” written on it. There’s a path beyond the closed gate leading into a tree-lined lane

This was the way it was supposed to be.
Ornate gates and exquisite carvings, but where were the angels and harps in welcome?
Had she taken a wrong turn?
The gates were closed to her, and no amount of rattling loosened the locks to grant her access.
She peered through them, searching for a sign of activity amongst the trees and shrubbery flanking the wide open path.
It was eerily quiet. No birdsong, complete silence in fact, save for her own breathing.
‘Hello?’ she called.
No answer.
Maybe she had to wait to be collected she thought.
Sitting cross-legged on the ground in front of the gates, she started humming to herself.
The sound echoed in her head, but the ear worm had taken hold and she could not shake it.
In front of her, the path began to glow and she stood to receive whatever was going to be presented.
She was not prepared for the pain.
Surely this couldn’t be right?
It shot through her again, the light becoming increasingly brighter and detached voices floated into her consciousness.

‘She’s back’ said a male voice, calm and professional.
Behind shuttered eyelids she began to remember……….. the night, the rain, loss of control before hitting the gates and the last image in her mind was The Way.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
