Throwback Thursday – #40 – Birthday Blasts

Lauren is our hostess this week and her theme is Birthday Blasts.
You can find out more here
I’ve had some fantastic birthdays in the past so I’m going to use Lauren’s prompt questions to cover the bases!

1) What’s your earliest birthday memory?
I remember always having a birthday party as a child, even numbers of boys and girls, 6 of each, plenty of food, games, and fun.
2) What was your favorite birthday and why?
Probably my 50th. Mum had asked my sister to put a picture of me in the paper ad she’d chosen one when I was about three with the caption that I was still cute.
Not one for parties in my adult life, Hubby and I had a special meal in one of the best Chinese restaurants in Poole. He’d bought me a solid silver bracelet and it was nice to dress up and go out somewhere ‘posh’.  I also took my retirement package from the bank which is just as well as when it was sold some years later, the company was only recognising existing pensioners.
For my 60th, I took cake round the marina and did the same round the estate here for my 65th.

3) What’s the best birthday present you have ever received?
Hubby has given me some lovely things for my birthday, and one of the lads I brought up from 1981 to 1989 bought me a shire horse but was upset he couldn’t afford the wagon to go with it. I still have it, and to me it is priceless.
4) Did you ever get money as a birthday gift?
Ten bob notes were no strangers in envelopes on my birthday as a child.
5) What did you like to do on your birthday as a kid? What do you like to do now?
Parties were always fun, Mum and Dad saw to that. Now I may do a special meal for the two of us.
6) Did you have birthday parties with friends or family parties?
See #1. Sis was the one for parties though and celebrated her 40th, 50th, 60th and 65th.
As to whether she had one for her 70th last year, I wouldn’t know.
7) Did you get to pick the food for your birthday? Did you prefer to eat a home cooked meal or to eat out at a restaurant on your birthday?
I’ve done all of this
8) Did your family have any fun birthday traditions? Did you continue those traditions with your own kids?
I always tried to make the kids in my care have some form of celebration on their birthdays. We had a fancy dress party one year which went down a storm.
9) Did you ever get to take the day off school on your birthday? As an adult did/do you take the day off?
No chance on both counts. In the office, birthdays were great and I ended up baking cake to feed 75!
10) Have you ever had a surprise birthday party? Was it a real surprise, or did you know it was coming?
No. I’m not one for surprises like that, but I threw a surprise 35th Wedding Anniversary party for my parents and it was wonderful to see their faces.

Bonus Question:
If you had a million dollars to spend only on your next birthday, what would you do?
The three of us would go down to NZ and spend it with Bro.

I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Thanks for joining in Di. It sounds like you’ve had some lively birthdays. It is wonderful that you gave the kids in your care a special day. Many times foster kids are not given such good treatment. I loved New Zealand. I can see why it would be a super place for you to go.
