Last week, I threw in the question to list five ways you can serve onions (or eggs).
Growing our own has provided us with a bumper crop every year, and so they go in every savoury dish I make.  I have made French onion soup in the past, raw onions are great with cheese in a sandwich, pickled silverskin onions with crackers, cheese, cherry tomatoes and grapes, and I make a pretty mean coleslaw!
With eggs, the usual suspects are boiled, fried, poached or scrambled, but they’re great in omelettes, frittatas, quiche, pancakes and of course cakes!

This week I thought we’d go for some positivity of diets that have worked for us.
Everyone is different, and what works for one won’t necessarily work for another, BUT
I believe that personal experience can work better than paper and lists which is basically what Saturday Swapit is all about.

I’ve tried loads over the years, most with limited success, but nothing permanent.
My MIL went on a liquid diet and couldn’t understand why she put on weight.
It turned out she was having the shakes as well as her usual intake of chips, cakes, pies etc instead of using them as replacement meals.  She was unkind in many of her comments about my weight, reducing me to tears on occasion though I never gave her the satisfaction of seeing me cry, and suggested I try it. With over £50 worth of the stuff in her cupboards, there was no way I could afford that, but I had tried it in the past and found it OK, but it left me hungry. I didn’t lose that much either and it all went back on plus more in a matter of weeks.

I never thought Group classes would work for me having tried Weight Watchers when I worked for the bank. I found the diet hard to follow because of the restrictions, but perhaps just going in my lunch hour and not being able to stay for ‘The Talk’ didn’t give it a fair chance. I gave it my best shot though. I was also swimming in other lunch hours or first thing in the mornings, so tried to increase my exercise. It didn’t work.
Anyway, a friend and I were getting married within weeks of each other in 1991 and she joined a slimming and aerobics group. The cost was cheaper than WW for both, so I signed up as well.
There was no diet plan as such, but food was the main topic of conversation obviously so everyone chipped in with ideas and recipes which I am hoping will happen here too. The support was 100%, not just from the leader, but fellow members. I lost ten pounds in five weeks which was probably down to the aerobics which I thoroughly enjoyed as I love to dance anyway and she set her routines to modern popular music. The floor exercises were also good at stretching and toning up muscles. Best of all she had a picture of herself when she was heavy on display and it gave everyone the incentive to try. Sadly I hurt my back (not dancing or exercising!!) and I had to kick it into touch.

Fast forward to June 2016 and I was told by the nurse sorting out Hubby’s INR that I qualified for 12 weeks free membership with Slimming World. I made a phone call as soon as we left the surgery and started the following Tuesday.
It worked for me because nothing was off limits, but ‘The Bad Stuff’ was categorized in a sensible format. The first thing I did was go through the book and hi-light everything I liked, ate, or craved. I kept a food diary and planned meals as best I could as living on the boat, we had no freezer, so food was bought as and when we needed it.
Another boater was also a member so we went together and supported each other. Her husband saw it all as a bit of a joke with Syns and having to weigh certain things for the allowances. Hubby would also have a laugh but he was supportive and we’d laugh together. The hardest bit was cooking for him and cutting down for me as I tried to keep to the same meals for both of us. I simply had less of the main and more veg.
By early September I was on target for my three stone certificate, then Humphrey turned up and everything had to go on hold.
However, joining SW helped me understand food better, and making better choices didn’t mean I couldn’t have the things I liked, just less of them, or not together.
I got through my radiotherapy OK and my weight was stable, but I was nowhere near my target now as I’d had to stop losing weight because my tattoo dots wouldn’t line up for my treatments if I lost any more.
We sold the boat and moved away, so I dropped out of group until May 2019 when Hubby paid for 12 weeks membership for my birthday and I started again. I hit target in August. Not the one I’d originally set but one I knew my body was comfortable with.
This ties in perfectly with what Melanie was saying in her post about Metabolic Set Points. This is where I’m at, and have been on target (or within the three pound parameters either side bar one week which I was allowed!) for over two years.
Even Dick didn’t put me off my stride, and I found it hysterical that after I’d had my mastectomy, I’d not lost a single ounce! The McMillan nurse assigned to me said that a boob weighed at least half a pound so I felt miffed and cheated LOL!

I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

    Such an interesting post Di. Isn’t it strange how we are all different. I used to go to weight watchers and found them great and the way of eating I learned there has stayed with me. … as the say we are all different and we all find our perfect fix in the end.

    • I know. WW has worked for a lot of people and still does. Sadly, when I joined all those years ago it was hard work for me to follow their diet, but I understand they have since changed a few things and it’s still a popular choice for success. My neighbour joined SW but wasn’t doing very well so signed up for WW instead. Sadly that didn’t work for her either, so she went back to SW and is still struggling. She has a sweeter tooth that I do and loves her cakes which she treats herself to every week. She has other health issues and problems with mobility but at the moment is stable. I think if you find something that works for you, it’s easier to stick with it. Thanks for commenting.

    I’m not a raw vegetable fan (cooked is fine but I’d prefer NOT to eat anything raw) but fruit is another matter. When I started losing weight I substituted fruit for sugary snacks – I especially liked fresh cherries and apples. I found the added benefit in digestive health… My favorite no sugar added snack was to core an apple and sprinkle it with cinnamon and microwave it until soft. I’d eat that and it was warm and sweet and healthy too. I liked it especially for an after dinner snack. The other fruit snack was frozen blueberries. My grandmother would freeze them and then eat them from a bowl like peanuts. That was a favorite in the summer – sort of the same chill as ice cream without the calories!

      The only raw vegetable I enjoy is carrots, though raw onions in a cheese sandwich is good.
      I have never eaten so much fruit as I have over the past 5 years, and used to add honey, brown sugar and sultanas to the cored apple. Frozen fruit is good to have as a standby for microwave crumbles and I use 50/50 porridge oats and granola, no sugar, no flour, no fat. This past year I have been having smoothies for breakfast sometimes. I also like to add a chopped apple to prawns in a salad.

Thanks for the nod and I’m off to write my post for this week, which didn’t get done yesterday due to life infringing on my writing time! 😄 It’s marvelous to see someone I know who has successfully lost the weight she wanted to, and more encouraging still, has kept it off for over two years, despite cancer and other considerations that would making eating ‘badly’ more attractive I think. The metabolic set point does work, once you can maintain your healthy weight for at least six months (I believe). The struggle to maintain is harder too (IMO) than losing it to start with. I’ll be back with my current post link shortly. Thanks for doing this Di! You are having an impact! 🙂

    • Thanks Melanie. You’re right, it is harder to keep it off than lose it in the first place. My GP all those years ago told me that my body would sort itself out if I gave it a chance. …. and here I am!

  6. Hi! Currently I’m using intermittent fasting. I only eat between 10am and 6pm. Slowly, some of my 10 lbs of Covid weight is coming off. My challenge is to get the best food in my body during those hours.

    How to use fruit. I use dried cranberries or raisins each day in my morning oatmeal. In summer it’s a daily thing to do a frozen blueberry smoothie with protein powder and Greek yogurt. I love eating an apple with peanut butter or cheddar for lunch many days. I also enjoy adding chopped apples, grapes, and dried cranberries to my chicken salad. And I enjoy a cup of mandarin oranges as snacks, especially when paired with a handful of pecans. I love fruit but I have to remind myself to eat it without making it into a fabulous dessert!
