Frank’s question for Truthful Tuesday today is
Do (or did) you work in a non-traditional work environment (work-at-home, travel, etc.), and do (or did) you enjoy it? If you don’t (or didn’t), do you think you would have liked the opportunity to do so?
My working life has always been in an office, apart from my spell as a kennel maid and a few weekends in a museum shortly after I took early retirement.
Being on the front line counter as a cashier, working from home would not have been possible in my banking days, though when I was a temp working for the Water Board, I was able to bring paperwork home with me to be prepared for input onto the computer system by another department.
Working from home may have been an option had one company I’d worked for been prepared to pay for my Broadband connection, but they decided against it and instead employed someone else, who basically didn’t know what they were doing and there were a host of problems afterwards.
In all honesty, I don’t think I would have enjoyed working from home though.
I was used to being part of a team and the disciplines of keeping to strict deadlines encouraged me to develop good time management skills. Also the nature of my job was very much ‘in house’ which involved contact with overseas offices and using certain software programmes. I am not techno savvy, so needed the backup of our computer systems guys in case anything went wrong.
I worked with animals so working from home was never an option. Even during the lockdowns the staff had to come in. At least they had job security and the work place was secure – they never had to worry about the virus when working since so much is done solo….
The local vets here are still working from doorsteps. We were so lucky with ours and when we get the new pup (whenever that may be) we’ll go back to them.
