The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS October 9, 2021

Linda Hill is our hostess for the SoCS prompt. You can find out more here

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “lid.” Use it in the literal sense, use it in the metaphorical sense, use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

My Dad always looked pretty dapper if he was going out, and for his birthday one year I bought him a waistcoat to wear under his suit to keep his chest warm.
Another time I bought him a straw boater to protect him from the sun when he was out in the garden tickling his cucumbers, grapes or melons with a feather. My sister has a terrific photo of him wearing it, and despite several requests in the past for a copy, none were  forthcoming.
One day, he was getting in a bit of a pickle looking for his lid, and being a keen home brew wine maker (he won a lot of prizes at the New Forest Show in his day), I started looking for bottle or container lids for his latest batch.
I was so proud when I found a pack of 6 and presented them to him to be met with a look of confusion.
‘What do I want those for?’ he asked, and I said it was the lids he was looking for.
He laughed and said no, he was looking for his hat which he sometimes referred to as his lid.
Happy days.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Your dad must have been a fun guy…or at least very interesting. I don’t know what methods my mom and dad used to grow their garden, but I never saw any feathers around. As for your dad’s lid and the wine, it reminded me of my dad, who had his own “lid” collection, and a maternal grandpa I never knew who made his own fresh batches of wine in the basement. I wonder how the taste would have compared with your dad’s. 🙂

    • Dad’s wine was like rocket fuel and you could lose your voice with some of it. Pretty damn tasty though! I have lots of happy memories of Dad in his garden or the attic making his wine.
Dad would have been interested in methods and ingredients.

  5. I love looking at old photos. So much has changed with clothing and all that but I sometimes wonder why that is so. Nice memory!

  6. Maggie says:
