Today is Tuesday 28th September

The month is galloping to a close isn’t it and October hits us in the face on Friday.

The day is bright and breezy so the washing is out and should dry as rain is not expected until this evening.
Our day is like most others, though Hubby has booked an INR appointment for this morning as he has been on antibiotics. We know this can send him way out of range, so rather than wait until next week, he arranged an appointment for today, which is actually the last day for taking his meds. We have also ordered our monthly meds online and they should be ready for collection in a couple of days.

For the first time in months I have no fresh fruit in the house so we shall be doing a little bit of shopping when we’re out this morning. It will be interesting to see what is, and isn’t, available on the shelves at the moment. Lunch is cottage pie, so nothing too taxing in the kitchen department. It’s only about 150g of minced beef so will probably only do the one meal. I buy a pack of minced beef (5% fat) and split it for the freezer. I get five packs out of a kilo and three out of 500g as I did this time. Our freezer is well stocked and we have rice and pasta in reserve. The first meal I cooked for Hubby in 1989 was a nothing pizza, using what I could find in my SIL’s cupboards. As long as we can get bread, veg, fruit, milk and eggs, I have a fighting chance of preparing a meal for us from basics. However,  it is not just food items that may be scarce, I’ve heard that cleaning products are in short supply, which includes kitchen roll, but toilet rolls are plentiful.

Hope your day is off to a good start. Take care and keep safe everyone.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. I thought 2021 would end on a bit of a high, not another crisis!

I hope your weather has been better than ours we have had torrential rain every 45/60 minutes apart today!! ,💜

    • It was a bit dull first thing, but we got the washing out, then went for Hubby’s appointment. By the time we got back, the sky was looking ominous so I got the washing in (it was dry) immediately and felt a couple of drips. It’s held off, but the wind is picking up and it’s turned colder now. Time to put the kettle on I think!

Ordering online for delivery I just ask but do not expect fruit or veggies ordered. I finally tried a bag of organic Granny Smith apples and so far they are very good. In the past I preferred to look and buy individually. No plums, apricots, peaches or strawberries even in summer.

  5. No empty shelves here. I keep hearing that there is going to be a coffee shortage, but it hasn’t materialized yet. I have noticed prices going up on fresh produce. I’m a bit snake bit from the paper and cleaning products shortage last year, so I’ve been slowly building up a little cushion of items in those areas. (No, the spare bedroom isn’t stacked with TP! LOL) Good to hear you were able to get all that you needed.

Hope he is in range! I think that experience allows many familiar with the kitchen to cobble together a meal from almost nothing. It may not be the most sophisticated or prettiest but it will be nourishing and filling! I think we will be seeing more shortages in the months to come… No canned mandarin oranges on the shelves and once more a dearth of sardines here.

    • Sadly he was out of range, but not by much so it should settle down by next week. So far the things we need have been available, though it’s cleaning products that are going fast now and we got the last spray kitchen cleaner yesterday.

That hasn’t happened here – the store are practically begging us to purchase hand sanitizer. One place was giving you a free bottle with every $20 spent! I think the only thing I’m low on is laundry bleach – I’m hoping there is some on the shelf!

      • Bleach was in short supply a little while ago, but seems well in stock at most places now.
