FPQ: Internet or air conditioning and heating

Oh wow. This is Fandango’s question this week:

If you were forced to choose, would you rather live without the internet or live without air conditioning and heating? Why?
We don’t have air conditioning in our property (other than opening the windows or door), but we do have central heating. This is run by gas, but requires electricity to run the pump. If the electricity fails, we have no heat as there is no other source of heat here.
In the cottage, we were all electric with oil fired central heating, which again required an electric pump. However, we had a multi purpose stove (log burner) in our lounge and could boil a kettle or cook a meal on the top in a pan if necessary.

Modern properties rely too much on electricity IMO, so without it, there would be a lot of discomfort in the colder months, many people dying of hypothermia being unable to heat their homes or cook themselves a hot meal.
It is something we have been thinking about actually, as although our house is very well insulated, if we can’t get it warm to start with, basically we’re stuffed.

The internet is useful, informative and a source of entertainment, plus our blogs are a pleasure for us both. Take that away, and after the initial shock of having to do without, we would find other means to occupy our time.

So in answer to Fandango’s question, I refuse to be cold for the sake of a sometimes iffy signal, and being old school anyway, would probably welcome going back to ‘the old ways’.

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. In your case, heading seems to be very essential indeed. Where I live, air conditioning isn’t really a necessity. So I had chosen the internet. Your comment on Fandango’s post had intrigued me but now I understand

    • We live on the East coast and get the winds from the North Sea which are bitterly cold in the winter. Neither of us like to be cold, and being so affects Hubby’s health greatly. Athough I’d miss my blogging friends on a regular basis, we could probably access our blogs via the library.

  2. Fandango says:

I think you’re the exception, Di. Most others would rather give up keeping cool or staying warm and opt for the internet.

  3. Absolutely 100% agree! Very well put! 🙂
