For the visually challenged reader, the image shows sunlight beams are falling on a mother and daughter walking in the forest, holding hands. Her eyes closed and she drifted to the woods that had always been her favourite place.
She wanted to stay forever.
Gentle fingers took her hand, familiar in their grip and warmth. She looked up into the eyes of her daughter, taken from her as a child so many years ago.
A tear fell.
‘I don’t understand,’ she whispered.
The smile was sunny and bright, just as she remembered.
‘You always said when it was your turn, someone you loved would be waiting for you on the other side. It’s me Mommy, and Daddy is here too, just beyond the trees.’
Sally looked around the room. It was cold, bleak and colourless, just as her widowed life had been.
She realised she was in no pain, as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her frail body.
She rose up from the castoff shell of life and together they walked towards the light, the pathway blossoming with colour at each step. It was a new beginning.
