Games People Play: a reblog for Throwback Thursday

Maggie’s subject for Throwback Thursday/ I remember when is Games People Play.

I wrote this shortly after I started my blog in 2013 and it was a bit long winded so didn’t see a lot of traffic.
We don’t have our toy box since leaving the cottage, but would always have a pack of cards. Hubby and I still play crib, we have a Scrabble and Mahjong set, and plenty of Suduku books. Patience we play on the computer (I swear it cheats), and still play words games by letter or name the film from a quote we remember. Best bit about it all is it’s FREE!
Happy memories anyway.

Games can be between adults, children or a mixture of the two. Card games, box games, verbal games, visual games, strategy games, logic games, sports, you pick.

This post is about the less strenuous varieties, those you can play almost anywhere at any time with anyone. No special tools or materials are necessary, and they are intended to relax you, not generate friction or illfeeling, though I know of several instances where the loser was far from graceful, and they were not the child playing! Games are supposed to be enjoyable and fun for all.

My favourites are probably Scrabble and Countdown as I love word and number games. Rather than have a winner and loser in our house, we go for a joint Scrabble score. Our personal best is just under 700, but I have no idea if that’s good in the eyes of the experts, but who cares?…

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Di, that was fun to read. Some of the games are very familiar and some I had never heard of at all. Like you, I like people who exercise good sportsmanship when playing a game. My sister’s Ex-husband was miserable when we used to play Euchre (a trick-taking card game). He was so obnoxious I reached the point of never wanting to play cards with him. I also love Scrabble and everyone else in my family hates it. We also had games we played in the car to pass the time on long road trips. Great memories. Thanks for playing again this week!

Fun reading about all the games you have played over the years. So nice to have those memories with family and friends! I remember a lot of them that we also played, but some were new names for me. I love playing games, too. 🙂
