It was her birthday and he wanted to give her something special.
‘If you loved me……………..’ she said, ‘You’d find a way to show it……………..’
Of course he loved her. What could he do?
At thirteen, his allowance would hardly buy her flowers or jewellery like they did in the movies.
First love was a bitch………. no, no, not that she was of course! Oh god……………..
That afternoon in the park a trader was selling balloons.
All of the main colours had gone and he was left with just yellow.
‘How much?’ Pete asked.
‘Fifty pence each.’
‘I only have a pound,’ he said crestfallen.
The man took pity on him and said he was packing up for the day anyway as the weather was on the turn, so he could have the lot for a pound.
‘Save me taking them home,’ he said.

So here he was, sitting in the pouring rain wearing his waterproofs holding a bunch of yellow balloons. He stood when he saw her.
She looked so cute wearing a pink raincoat and matching wellies. Her Mum was close behind and they were going for pizza as a birthday treat.
‘Happy birthday to the sunshine of my life,’ he said thrusting the balloons in her face.
Taking them off him, she threw her arms round him and hugged him tight.
‘I knew you’d find a way!’

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
