Sunday Writing Prompt, April 25/21- Define Insanity

Sara has found something rather interesting to inspire us for her writing prompt this week. You can find out more and read the entire list here

This week’s Challenge: Write on one or more, “Reasons for Admission

Admissions to a Women’s Insane Asylum, 1864-1889

Some of the reasons stated are indeed baffling, and some even ludicrous.
I get the impression that women were not allowed to get excited or enthusiastic about anything and as for the dreaded PMT (or PMS in  US), definitely a committal offence if Menstrual Deranged, Periodic fits, Women Trouble or Imaginary Female Trouble are anything to go by.
It goes to show that men had no idea how to handle a woman in those days, especially if she had her own opinions, desires, and perhaps dreams of a career, especially in politics! So much easier to simply state they were insane and have them carted off to an institution.
Makes you wonder what would have become of our two lady PMs as well as a certain duchess and her ego. Blimey.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. This is what happens when the experts have no clue what they are doing.

  2. It’s a scary thought, for sure. I cannot imagine having to live like that. suppose if you know no other way… but still. Blimey is right!

  3. Sadje says:

Hilarious list, and yes it’s sad too for all those women who were subjected to untoward treatment because of it.

  4. murisopsis says:

It was the same on this side of the Atlantic – sadly. We’ve come a long way baby!

  5. The sad thing is that while we’ve come a long way there’s still so much way to go. Even today many gynaecological issues are demeaned and looked at as ‘female low tolerance to pain’…

I am as stunned as you Di 💜💜
