The Secret in the stone – Image by KL Caley
Everyone gave it a wide berth, yet it was never seen to be overgrown with weeds.
No-one knew who was buried there, or the family concerned. It was just ‘there’, and had been for as long as the village folk could remember.
Then a stranger came, bearing books and tomes of research, in a quest to find his roots.
What had thought to be an ornate carving was in truth a lock, one that held no key, for the one buried there was damned and the lock prevented escape.
The visitor took up vigil by the graveside, waiting patiently for the full moon to shine down on the stone lock and light the way for the undead to rise.
He was ready to welcome his ancestor with open arms, to accept his inheritance of eternal life.
The moonbeam struck and whispers on the wind joined in a joyous cacophony.
The ground shifted, and the edges of the stone began to come free, but the lock held fast.
The husk of his body was found next day, but the grave remained unchanged.
Or was it?
