The New Arrivals – Image by KL Caley
For visually challenged writers, the image shows a group of mother sheep about to give birth, with one newly arrived lamb visible.
‘Any idea why we’ve been sectioned off like this Gladys?’
‘No Flo. Mind you, we seem to have put on a bit of weight, so maybe that’s got something to do with it.’
‘Piffle ladies. Farmer Johns has been deliberately fattening us up. More pounds per pound I heard. It’ll all end in tears I tell you!’
‘Oh shut up Edna!’ The others said in ewenison. ‘You are such a depressive!’
‘Maybe it’s wind?’ Ethel murmured quietly. ‘I saw a film once where the sheep all blew up like balloons and had to be popped to let the air out’.
‘I don’t think so Ethel’, Gladys replied. ‘We’re not in any discomfort are we? I mean the straw is lovely and thick, we’re warm, have fresh water and for once those blessed dogs are nowhere in sight! I get so fed up being herded in and out of that pen just so that they can get petted. Judy nipped my ankle when I tried to rebel. The little minx crept up behind me while Jasper kept my attention.’
They all laughed and suddenly Gertie let out a bewildered cry.
All eyes turned on her and the little bundle that has literally fallen out in mid giggle.
‘Well!’ she said. ‘Whadayaknow? Oh my, here comes another. Look out ladies! Guess we know why we’re here now!’
‘Trust you to be first!’ Edna said miserably. ‘Bet I get the vet with the cold hands.’
