Here we are half way through the month, and any snow that was forecast has gone AWOL as it ain’t here!
I had a late start to the day, rolling over at 6am and going back to sleep until almost 9.30.
I got up, had a shower, then breakfast, porridge and blueberries today which made a nice change.
We nipped down to the next town to get Hubby’s yogurts, then after putting them in the fridge, went for our first walk.
We took a couple of slices of bread to feed the ducks so were very popular. Geraldine was in full voice, and Radar wasn’t far away hoping to get a few crumbs. Notices say not to feed the geese, and we don’t, but we can’t stop them pecking where crumbs tend to fall.

There was a funeral in the little Catholic Church this morning and the funeral company were making sure access was kept clear for the hearse and mourning cars. Numbers are limited to no more than 30 at the moment, though that does not include funeral or clergy staff. By the time we came back, everyone was inside and as it turned out, we had followed the hearse from town. The floral tributes were beautiful, spelling out Mum and Nan.
RIP dear lady, whoever you were.
Lunch today was pasties but I looked up the syn value first and had a shock to discover a standard pasty attracts 21 and a large one like we have is 28! So I decided on fish in breadcrumbs (8½) and 100g wedges (2½) with beans and some cherry tomatoes to pack out my plate. Two days to text/weigh in and I don’t want to blow it this week!
I love feeding the ducks, Di. I wonder why the geese are precluded. Good luck with your weigh-in. I know that pastry is high calorie.
We have five permanent residents on the lake, but in the season can have as many as 200. They make a lot of mess and can be quite aggressive, so the council wants to deter them. I hiss back at them or talk to them when walking by, plus we give them room if they have babies, but some still let me close enough with my camera and I got some great shots. Our first summer here there were over 50 goslings. The second, they raided the nests of eggs to keep numbers down, and last year we lost all broods of ducklings and goslings alike to a water fowl disease that wiped them out.
Nature usually finds a way to rectify overpopulation problems. It probably wasn’t necessary for the council to interfere at all.
Apparently they’ve done this before to keep numbers down. Best to not let eggs hatch than have a massive cull I guess.
I bought a different brand of bread and realized the calorie count was double our usual brand… So open faced sandwiches for me! It seems sneaky that they can pack in the calories (and I imagine the syns) in some things. I’ve been making things from scratch and it really reduces the calories… Good luck with your weigh in. The photo made me laugh at that silly goose!
He (or she) is so funny. We called him Radar because as soon as the bag’s out, he’s there! Of course we have no idea if it really is the same one………………….. LOL.
Yes counting calories is a minefield as you think you’re doing fine until you read the weight or quantity. I only have 4 syns left for today, and crackers are 2 each, a slice of bread 4, let alone what I put on it, so for my final meal I had a jacket potato, mushrooms and some chicken which are all free (I don’t have butter in it) so still have leeway for my fruit, yogurt (1) and granola topping (1) if I fancy some later.
I am not a goose I am a large duck 🦆
Yep, he tried it on (and got fed)
Excellent 👌
good to know how much fish in breadcrumbs is worth in syn value! I sometimes eat that for dinner! I’ll stay away from the pasties! xo
If I have a piece of fish I adjust my syns accordingly, or have a double syn day.
