It’s Wednesday, 23rd December

What a contrast in the weather! We are back to cold winds, grey skies, and rain, rain, rain.
We’ve done a mini wash (3 days) as we can get that dry indoors, but other than that have no plans. If there’s a break in the wet stuff later, we’ll try and get out for at least one walk.
We will be going out this evening to collect our meds as the pharmacy is open until 11pm.

The meters are read and everything is as expected, so we should have no nasty surprises when the bills come in. We’ve already had our water bill which was spot on even though it was estimated, and paid that on receipt. Gas and electricity are on a monthly direct debit and we are on budget for that, and our phone bill comes in by email every month.
I don’t know if it’s the same elsewhere in the UK, but we have had no letter post deliveries here for 10 days. The parcels van has only been seen twice in the past week, but independent firms such as HERMES, UPS, DHL and DPD are regular visitors, as are the supermarket food deliveries. We usually get three or four postal deliveries here a day, and when we saw our lovely postie last week on one of our walks, we asked what was happening as we’d had no mail in our street for days. She said things were manic as staff were falling sick and the backlog was escalating, but they were trying to keep on top of it.
Hubby checked the internet and there are indeed huge piles of unsorted mail in the sorting offices nationwide, and the Royal Mail has apologised that it will not be able to keep to its pledge of deliveries before Christmas.
Photo: a chili with extra tomatoes from our boating days (February 2017)

Dinner today is a two day chili so that I don’t have to worry about tomorrow as we prepare to really push the boat out on Friday. I shall do a mountain of veg ready for our bubble and squeak on Boxing Day. Weigh in on Sunday, so I am trying desperately to give myself some leeway so that I can enjoy my Christmas dinners!

Keep safe everyone.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Sorry to hear the postal workers are having difficulties. Our soon to be former President tried to ruin the postal service here by installing one of his cronies to oversee it. They ordered that sorting machines be removed etc. The postmasters in many places quietly ignored his orders and the mail (especially the mail in ballots) kept moving. So far I haven’t seen a drop in deliveries here.

  2. That looks lovely. Itโ€™s dreadful here but they are now saying we might crash into a really cold spell after the bad winds on Boxing Day.

  3. Post delivers here are okay, but others are delay. I have seen the problems your county is having right now while things are good they seem better than what is going in the UK.

  4. Yum! Chili sounds PERFECT, thanks for the idea for dinner for me today! Mine’s out of a can, but the portion size is right at least. I’m so sorry about the mail, over here (as far as I know) it’s crawling along as per usual. I haven’t been to check on it in two weeks now, but as I was ill and don’t get all that much anyway, it’s all good. Now answer me this: What IS ‘bubble and squeak?” I hear the phrase now and then, and I’m fascinated by the sound of it… cabbage is in there?

    • It can vary, but usually consists of left over veg mixed with mashed potato, formed into rounds or one huge slab, and fried in the frying pan until crunchy. Cabbage is popular to go in it, but ours will have carrots, sprouts, green beans, cauliflower, and broccoli as I shall be cooking extra on Christmas Day for it. We’ll have that with pickle (a relish, not like your gherkins or pickles), cold meat (turkey, ham, pigs in blankets, and chicken) and cold stuffing balls if there’s any left. Sometimes it’s nicer than the traditional Christmas dinner!
