Song Lyric Sunday 29th November

Jim’s theme this week is the affectionate animal prompts of Bird/Cat/Dog/Fish/Pet.

I’m a dog person. Anyone who reads my blog might have already gathered that, but I much prefer the company of dogs to people sometimes. Dogs seem to like me too, and in my entire life, I can only remember coming across two that didn’t.

Hubby and I have had a dog for twenty seven of the almost thirty two years we’ve been together, sixteen of those were with Maggie. We miss her terribly, but are able to talk and joke about her on our walks, little things like crossing the road or which direction to take is left ‘up to Maggie’, and we have to stop ourselves leaving little titbits to put in a dish that is no longer there.

This one goes back to 1971, and was a double A side holding the number one spot for five weeks.

“Maggie May”

Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It’s late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I’m being used
Oh Maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that’s what really hurtThe morning sun when it’s in your face really shows your age
But that don’t worry me none in my eyes you’re everything
I laughed at all of your jokes my love you didn’t need to coax
Oh, Maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that’s a pain I can do without

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover and
mother what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed
and in the morning kick me in the head
Oh Maggie I couldn’t have tried anymore
You lured me away from home ’cause you didn’t want to be alone
You stole my heart I couldn’t leave you if I tried

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy’s cue and make a living out of playing pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin’ hand
Oh Maggie I wish I’d never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I’m as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart but I love you anyway

Maggie I wish I’d never seen your face
I’ll get on back home one of these days

My Mum used to call Maggie ‘Maggie May’ and it stuck, though she was named for being a people magnet, not after a song or the baby in The Simpsons. Maggie stole our hearts and souls, but we never regret seeing her face.

However, in keeping with Jim’s theme, I’m going with this as well:

“Who Let the Dogs Out” is a song performed by the Bahamian group Baha Men. Originally released by Anslem Douglas, it was covered by producer Jonathan King who sang it under the name Fat Jakk and his Pack of Pets. He brought the song to the attention of his friend Steve Greenberg, who then had the Baha Men cover the song. Source WIKI

And I can’t see color, any color will do
I’ll stick on you, that’s why they call me Pitbull
Cause I’m the man of the land
When they see me they say Woo!

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. Aw!! A tribute song to a wonderful dog! ❤ But I found "Who let the dogs out" to be pretty darned funny (I've always thought that of that song)…. Great choices today, if a little bittersweet perhaps.

  2. Thanks for playing Maggie’s song today.

  3. Both great songs. My heart hurts for you.

  4. Carol anne says:

What a fitting song Di! I do love this one! A fitting tribute to beautiful sweet maggie!
