Sunday Writing Prompt – 1st November –It Was A Joke

‘It was a joke!’  is not exactly the sort of thing one would expect to hear on their wedding night.
But it happened to me.

The now ex-husband had slipped a note through my window when I worked in the bank asking me out. It was all very romantic and exciting and eighteen months later we were married.
As he was taking the pins out of my hair and I was trying to get all the backcombing out,  he said
‘You know that note I put through your till?’
I probably got all dreamy eyed as I nodded.
‘Well, it was a joke. My sister wrote it, never believing for one minute you’d go out with me.’
The POP of my love bubble was so loud, they probably heard it on Mars.
Gathering what was left of my sense of humour and pride, I said
‘Oh well, the joke’s on her then,’ and kept on brushing, more vigorously.
We separated three years later and the divorce was finalised the following year.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

How sad. I’m sure the disappointment was crushing… um, unless this is a fiction, but it has that ring of truth to it.

  2. Uh, no offense, but your ex sounds rather stupid. Who admits something like that, when it WORKED? My condolences, but now you have a good husband, so maybe it was worth kissing a frog for a while to get to where you are?

    • No offense taken Melanie as I find it quite funny, and did after a few days because he was such a wimp he couldn’t write his own letter! We should never have got married and I went from frog to toad with the Ex partner in Bath until I hit the jackpot with the gem I have now.

That certainly would set the alarm bells ringing 🙂💜

  4. That is a true story!?!?! Well, jokes on him. I guess if you were going to admit it was a joke that might be after the first date…something to look back at and chuckle. On my wedding day, my mother-in-law leaned over and told me she was surprised Bob actually showed up….Thanks..

    • Yep. He asked me out on a dare. I should have married the best man…….. he was taller. LOL

      • Also at my wedding, the best man’s girlfriend, who was married to someone else, came up to me and said I should have dated Bob (my new husband) instead of Chuck (the best man). Later that night I had to ask her if I could take him to dance with me! Looking back that should have been a bit of a flag but if we all paid attention to all of those flags no one would be married! Lol.
