Sunday Writing Prompt – 25th October – At the Edge of the Universe.

Michael’s challenge today:

Use the following statement as a basis for writing a story.

There’s a planet at the edge of the universe not unlike the earth in landscape and atmosphere. But its inhabitants are not.”

It was believed that should the end of the world be imminent, it would be a suitable place to migrate to, and governments worldwide had made provision for the elite, the extremely  rich who could buy their own passage and a selected few to be transported there in shuttle ships.

A surveillance team had been sent ahead, but on their return the news was not good, and only half of the crew had retained their sanity. The scientists and psychiatrists tried to understand the implications, but quadruple trillions of dollars had been invested and no-one really wanted to rock the boat for the saviour of Mankind or be responsible for its extinction.

As it happened, it didn’t matter as the returning craft was infested with the seed of the alien planet. In no time at all, the virus took hold, spiralling out of control as it piggybacked on anything and everything, mutating as it went. It was the reason their species had survived for millennia, adapting to their environment and claiming it as their own. Within two years the Earth would be just another planet at the edge of the universe, just like a hundred others.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
