Today is Sunday 18th October

The sun is out and so is the washing. Hopefully it will dry despite there being little wind, but we are optimistic.

I walked Maggie this morning just after 8am and there was a lovely tantalising smell of bacon when I got back. Now I don’t know about you, but that is one of the most heavenly smells to whet your appetite and wake up your taste buds almost to drooling status.
Unfortunately it was not coming from our house and we had porridge  😦 😦 😦
I haven’t bought bacon for a while now as the quality changed and not only was there more fat per rasher, but they shrank with so much water content. When I was a kid, Mum would do Dad a fry up for breakfast at the weekend. He liked his bacon crisp and I remember being given the rind to suck on. Happy memories.
Bacon was always for breakfast when I was younger, but with rising costs, it soon became the basis of a main meal of the day packed out with tatty cake, hash browns or chips, beans, tomatoes, sausage, black pudding, fried eggs, mushrooms and fried bread.

Just had a text message from SIL to let us know Other Brother has had his knee op. I will put a card in the post to him as this is a first………. her to contact us.

Not much on the agenda today. Lunch is cottage pie and I am going to experiment by making veg patties for Hubby. He managed some chicken yesterday so another solid in small amounts he can tolerate. He’s put on two pounds this week.

We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  3. I’m a bacon-o-holic. I usually have four slices for breakfast (because there is a ‘hungry’ dog who demands his share). I suspect I’ll have to cut that back in the future if the heart thing gets worse..but for now? I’m enjoying my bacon. So good. But I fully agree with you about the QUALITY of what is out there now, compared to the product we may know from our youth. My mother would get a big package of ‘ends’, and most of it was really fat bacon pieces that were so delicious, but the rinds were just as good. Ummmm!

  5. Bacon reminds me of my childhood breakfasts too, Di. My mother used to make a cooked breakfast on a Sunday with bacon and eggs. Now, I use it for quiche or pizza.

    • I think it was Saturday breakfast for Dad as we always had a full roast on Sundays. I can still see him sitting at the kitchen table tucking in, and we moved out of the council house in 1965 when I was 9. Happy days.

    I love the taste of bacon but the smell of it cooking is not one of the aromas that I enjoy… I rarely make or eat it since both of us are trying to watch our cholesterol… Bacon and eggs was the standard breakfast on weekends when I was growing up. It is a rare treat for us – Sparky prefers a bagel and cream cheese and I enjoy oatmeal!
