We’ve done it again and got a freebie.
When we bought our settees two years ago, the owner of the shop threw in a coffee table free of charge which has done us very well.
It’s a solid piece of oak furniture and attracted a label of £80 so we were very pleased.
Over the past few months, we have commented that it would be nice to have one with a shelf underneath, and recently started looking.
Prices started around £50 and we saw exactly what we wanted for £70 but it was out of stock, not even available for mail order and home delivery.
Today we paid a visit to the local charity shop where I saw one that would have been perfect though it didn’t have a shelf. From there we went to the place where we got the settees and they had none at all, concentrating now on suites, sofas and beds.
There was second hand furniture shop about 50 yards up the road, and they had several, but the only one with a shelf was glass, and that’s not our style.
Finally, we stopped at another second hand shop and there were a couple on the frontage, plus a nest of tables, though nothing inside. Seeing some stuff at the back of the driveway, I ambled down and found a small table with a shelf that would suit us. I carried it over to the car for Hubby’s opinion and he nodded, so I took it into the shop and asked how much they wanted.
‘Where did you find it?’ I was asked.
‘Out back. It’s just what I’m after.’
He came out to have a look and said he didn’t even know they had it. His mate said it had been picked up yesterday and had a mark on it.
‘You can take it,’ he said.
‘What, for nothing?’
‘Yep. It’s yours if you want it.’
So we now have a smaller coffee table with a shelf as required, and will try and get a few bob for the other one.
I think it looks OK and no-one will be bumping their knees or barged by the dog trying to get past.
Hubby says it’s handmade and intends to strip it down then revarnish it. I think we may also add a trim round the sides of the top to finish it off.
