Gone are the days when we would have outside lessons and sometimes a nature ramble on a school outing. We’d be given a list of things to look out for, find and collect, then in class next day would discuss what we’d gathered.
No living creatures of course like slow worms, beetles, caterpillars, bugs or butterflies, but there was always an array of pebbles, stones, twigs, grasses and the occasional pretty flower.
I loved classes like that. Go out of first school when you were encouraged to learn about Nature and your surroundings and enter that of Big School where you’re given a book about nature and told to read. It’s not the same.
