Dog Days #1

Over the years my family have had a variety of dogs, most of which were able to enjoy a trip in the car.
I understand that someone has come up with the idea of ‘doggles’ for our furry friends so that they can stick their heads out of the open window and let the wind blow in their face, but not their eyes.

Maggie’s predecessor Barney loved a ride when he was young, but started to pace in the back which was very distracting and potentially dangerous, even though he was secured.
Unfortunately, it got so bad that we couldn’t take him anywhere and he had to stay at home. This wasn’t really a problem as he had an outdoor kennel and was content to watch the world go by through the gate, and would greet the postman affectionately as he brought him treats.

Maggie is a well travelled dog having clocked up some 30,000 miles when she was two years of age as we took her everywhere when we were house hunting way back in 2007.
We cannot go for a trip anywhere without her now as she suffers from separation issues and howls if we leave her behind.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

A dog that enjoys a car ride is great. Our last dog loved the car! We took him on several trips and it was always difficult when we finally came home. He would sit by the garage door and beg to go see the car. Once in the garage he’d circle the car trying to find an open door… We’d have to drag him into the house and he’d pine for the car… he was so love sick! It is too bad that Maggie has separation anxiety but lucky that she is a good traveller!

    • She wasn’t as a puppy though so we hit on the idea of scrambled egg for breakfast and it worked. We checked with the vet and he said provided it didn’t upset her digestion or bind her, it was OK. She still has one.

  3. Maggie is so lucky to go everywhere with you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one day dogs could talk and tell you how much they love you? I know it is silly but Brody always looks like he is about to talk.

Our old dog has cataracts and has trouble seeing when the sun is out. We were wondering if there are canine sunglasses, but maybe tinted “doggles” would work!
