Steak Out : 9 June 2020

Not that we could afford a steak meal out these days as at the last count, an 8oz rump steak was around £12 – £15.
The piece I bought today was just over £4 and big enough for the three of us. Yes, even Maggie had a piece of best steak today for her dinner.  I mixed it with some of her own food and the juices from the pan and she woofed it down.

I don’t grill my steaks, instead I put them in a frying pan with some water, bring to the boil and then simmer, turning frequently. Her ladyship could smell the meat cooking and patiently sat in the door threshold of the kitchen. No way was anyone getting past her without giving her some!
I served Hubby’s with peas, wedges and mushrooms, and mine with a bed of additional salad and a tomato. Unlike our wedding anniversary dinner when I tossed button mushrooms in sage and onion stuffing mix, this time I put a couple of larger closed cup mushrooms in with the peas for the last ten minutes having turned off the heat (I cook on an electric hob so it retains the heat for ages) and ‘steamed’ them. They kept their flavour and enhanced the meal.
For those interested, my meal would be considered free (other than the mayo I added which was ½ a syn per tablespoon and I had a good dollop so probably 1), even the wedges as they were calculated.

Bangers and mash tomorrow. Syns probably off the charts for the bangers, but I’ll look them up. The mash will be ‘free’ as I don’t add butter or milk.

  3. That looks wonderful. Son would cover his plate with ketchup.

    • A friend’s fiance loved ketchup………… on a roast dinner with all the trimmings. I couldn’t watch, it was bad enough partner smothering his meal in brown sauce! I’d get through a bottle week. Yuk.

  4. I never thought of boiling the steak, will it be tender? Also what are bangers

    • Hi Alice. I cook my chicken breasts and pork chops the same way and they are never dry or tough. The secret is to gently ‘steam’ in a covered pan but turn often.
      Bangers are sausages, and I cook them the same way too, using the stock as a basis for my onion gravy.
