Jim has given us the theme of Alone/Confined/Depressed/Isolated/Restless/Solo today.

As a teenager, I was a late starter in the boyfriend stakes, and both of these songs struck a chord with me for feeling lonely and undesirable, though I liked them both.
“Alone Again (Naturally)” is a song by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan. It was released in 1972 at the same time as (but not on) the album, Back to Front. In total, the single spent six weeks, non-consecutively, at No. 1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1972. (source WIKI)
[Verse 1]
In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people saying
My God that’s tough, she stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
[Verse 2]
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to, but who wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
[Bridge 1]
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do?
What do we do?
[Classical guitar solo]
Alone again, naturally
[Verse 3]
Now looking back over the years
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn’t understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
My other choice was released in 1973 by another singer/songwriter and is this:

Now the band is playing very slow
Once again I’ll get my coat and go
A lonely wallflower, waiting by the wall
Without the willpower to face the music at all
Please…
Won’t somebody dance with me
Start up a romance with me
Just someone to care
Someone so rare
For a dance with me
I feel so silly in my patent shoes
So many partners but none of them will choose
A lonely wallflower, growing very tired
Into the small hours and feeling undesired
Please…
Won’t somebody dance with me
Start up a romance with me
Just someone somewhere
Someone who’ll dare
Take a chance with me
Won’t somebody dance with me
Start up a romance with me
Just someone somewhere
Someone who’ll dare
Take a chance with me
Just someone to care
Someone somewhere
For a dance with me
(May I have the pleasure of this dance?)

I remember Alone Again. Not heard it in years. Forgot how much I love that song.
I liked his Nothing Rhymed………… especially the strings at the end.
Some sad music today. I was not familiar with Lynsey De Paul, so I Googled her and found out that she died 4 years ago. De Paul never married but was romantically linked to a string of well-known men including Sean Connery, Dudley Moore and Ringo Starr.
I was never actually a fan, but I liked this and also No Honestly. It was a sad loss when she died
I chose Gilbert O’Sullivan and I loved the song, then picked Lynsey Dr Paul which I remember well.
There is something about both songs that are very similar 😁 great choices both 💜
thanks
Gilbert is a fav but don’t remember Lynsey. Nice shares!
She also wrote Sugar Me and No Honestly and repressented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977 with Rock Bottom which came second.
She was also involved with James Coburn after meeting him at a party that Joan Collins hosted. Her life was very interesting and having never settled down, she as a whole is perfect for this prompt.
I remember that now you come to mention it.
Gilbert O’Sullivan is one of my favorites. I still need to hear his new one from 2018.
thanks Li. Good to know he’s still around isn’t it.
Yes
How many of us did this song?
I think a fair few John which is why I did a second this time.
