Song Lyric Sunday: Easter Sunday

For today, April 12, Jim has given us Diamond/Emerald/Jade/Pearl/Ruby/Sapphire
I don’t usually play by the rules as I pick songs I remember from years back, some of which hold a precious memory.

Marilyn Monroe?Β  Shirley Bassey? Elkie Brookes? All diamonds, so I’m going with a pearl from July 1969. I’d turned thirteen that May, so it was the start of my teens. I didn’t actually buy this one, but it was forever being played on the radio. Mine was a little black transistor radio, no remotes in those days, so I had to physically turn it on and off. The batteries never lasted long though as I used to tune in to Radio Luxembourg at night and of course fell asleep!

Enjoy Sonny Charles and the Checkmates with Black Pearl.

[Intro]
Ooh, hoo
Yeah, yeah, yeah
My, my, my, my

[Chorus]
Black pearl, precious little girl
Let me put you up where you belong
Black pearl, pretty little girl
You been in the background much too long

[Verse 1]
You been working so hard your whole life through
Tending other people’s houses, raising up their children too
Hey, how about something for me and you
Here in my arms you’re gonna reign supreme
No more serving, baby, they’re gonna serve my queen
It’s our turn for happiness and our day has come
Living for each other, answering to no one

[Chorus]
Black pearl, precious little girl
Let me put you up where you belong
‘Cause I love you
Black pearl, pretty little girl
You been in the background much too long

[Verse 2]
Together we’ll stand so straight and so tall
Created by love to love one and all, hey
Heart to heart, soul to soul
No other woman could ever take your place
My world is built around the very smile that’s on your face
You’ll never win a beauty show, no, they won’t pick you
But you’re my Miss America, I love you

[Chorus]
Black pearl, precious little girl
Let me put you up where you belong
I need you
Black pearl, pretty little girl
You been in the background much too long

[Outro]
Ooh, hoo, yeah, yeah, yeah
My, my, my, my babe
You know I need you
You know I want to keep you for myself
And, I don’t want nobody else
Now, baby, I love you
You know I need you
You know I got to, got to
Got to have you, baby
Come on, baby
Come on, come on
Come on and be my baby
You know I love you
I don’t need nobody else
Let me put you up
Where you belong
Let me take you on up
Come on baby, love
I love you, and I need you, and I want you
Want you for myself

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

Like I mentioned to someone else, this song sounds really familiar, though I can’t remember hearing it on the radio. I do remember having a little black transistor radio that I’d listen to way into the night when I was young. πŸ™‚
