I remember reading a book called A Kiss Through Glass about Anthony Nolan and written by his mother Shirley in 1979.
Her work and dedication led to the first bone marrow donor register being set up in 1974.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. My mother, who passed away in 1994, had a bone marrow transplant in the 80’s. Not the first, but one of the newer patients. At the time we lived in Connecticut but she had to go to Cleveland Ohio, The Cleveland Clinic, for about six months. My brother at the time was in nursery school, so being a teen he was my responsibility. I remember she came back feeling good, but allergic to our dog! She cried because we had to find him a new home. Haha, the interviews she had! Anyhow, just a few months ago I read a note she had written apparently after the transplant, but when she got re-diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, how disappointing and sad it was because the bone marrow transplant was supposed to fix it all! She must have been devastated! Anyhow, now they are done much more frequently. I am on a registry but only made it as far as the bloodwork. I have heard it is quite painful for them to extract a sample.
