Linda has kindly selected my word choice today which is Dogs.

Most of you are saying now there’s a surprise, but although I’ve posted it before, here is my party piece of 1965 that never was! I haven’t copied it as I still remember it word for word after almost 55 years!
The Dog’s Meeting.
The dogs once held a meeting,
They came from near and far,
Some came by automobile,
And some came by car.
But each one as he entered
Before around he looked,
Had to take his tail off,
And hang it on a hook.
Now when the meeting started
With each Mother, Son and Sire,
A dirty little yellow dog
Jumped up and hollered ‘Fire!’
They all jumped up in panic
And had no time to look
As each one grabbed at random
A tail from off a hook.
They got their tails all well mixed up
Which made them very sore
To have to have to wear a tail
They’d never worn before.
That’s the reason you will see
When walking down the street,
A dog will stop to smell the tail
Of every dog he meets.
That’s the reason you will find
A dog will leave a bone,
To go and smell another tail,
He wants to find his own.
I chickened out of my recital and played the piano instead, earning myself five bob (25p in today’s money).
Note:
Apparently there is another poem very similar which is where my Dad got the idea from. As to whether this is entirely an original by him, I don’t know.
I enjoy that nonetheless!
I’m pleased Pam.
Lovely, lighthearted poem.
I remember my Dad teaching it to me ready for the wedding, and then I couldn’t deliver!
Aww! Well you know it now!
I’ve never forgotten it!

So funny! Thanks for the great topic! π

This is very special. A good way to tell the story of why dogs do tail smelling.
Thank you. It certainly has happy memories for me.
I love it! Thanks so much for sharing, Di. π And thanks again for the prompt!
You’re welcome Linda
