This week’s prompt ~ Fume
For visually challenged writers, the image shows a line of leaf-bare trees outlined against a pall of white smoke, brightly lit from within. The shape made by the smoke looks rather like the head of a mythical beast…
It had risen out of the dark depths without warning, consuming everything in its path.
No-one knew what it was, this great beast as it gasped along its journey.
Many fled for their lives, some simply stood and stared, waiting to be devoured.
It cried………….. a piercing shrill in the stillness, the thunderous vibrations announcing its presence.
“Toby? ”
Toby was new to the area, and eyes downcast, the nine year old approached the teachers desk when she beckoned him over.
“This is a rather interesting concept of a steam train. Would you care to explain to class how you came up with the idea?”
Blushing madly, he said
‘Well, I was thinking about us just moving here, and something no-one had ever seen before, like aliens landing and not understanding. Just imagine how frightened we’d all be if something came out of the dark in a plume of smoke and we had no idea what it was………….’
At home, Toby proudly showed off the gold star his teacher had put on his jumper with pride. Finally he had done something his classmates thought was good rather than silly.
This is a really lovely story, Di 🙂
Thanks Sue. I had an idea but didn’t know where to take it and it ended up as this!
I love it… very imaginative 🙂
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Awh! Yay for Toby! Great story.
