First Line Friday: December 6th, 2019

It is First Line Friday! Welcome and let’s get writing.

Below, Dylan gives us the first line and we all get to write the rest. This prompt alternates with Jim’s Music Prompts.

This is our pictureand our line for this week is:

A crack like a gunshot pierced the frozen air and the ice broke.

‘What the hell was that!’ demanded Alec standing up sharply.
Everyone started talking at once, excited jabbering, nervous stutters, animated gestures and a lot of surprised faces.
‘That,’ Simone said calmly,’ is our ice breaker. It never fails in a room full of strangers and gives everyone common ground upon which to open a discussion.’
‘This is supposed to be a team building exercise!’
‘And so it is. Everyone interprets things in a different way, so as we are in a controlled environment, we can now discuss how each of you perceived our opener. Alec, you can start.’
‘It was a bloody gunshot! Some maniac on the rampage. We could all have been killed!’
‘Do you hear screams? Panic? People running?’
Alec was quiet for a second or two.
‘Actually, no.’ He sat down.
‘Pamela…………. what did you think?’
‘Um……….. a car backfiring, but then we’re nowhere near traffic, so I admit I was a little confused.’
‘Eric? How about you?’
‘Surprise more than anything else, as I couldn’t see where it was coming from and there was no follow up’.
One by one, Simone encouraged them to voice their thoughts. Several had thought like Alec, but it was noted that not one person dived for cover or made for the exit.
‘Excellent.’ she said. ‘Now we can begin………’

for this post, the picture isn’t relevant to my story other than as a descriptive graphic.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
