Poor Maggie.
The heat has really been getting to her and like us, it has done nothing to help her arthritis.
We have been aware of more stiffness in her joints, and noticed a couple of days ago that she was limping. On checking her foot, we could see where she’s been licking her feet incessantly which is usually a sign of boredom or anxiety, so I cleaned it with antiseptic and applied the antibiotic cream we keep in reserve for such occasions.
Hubby noticed after her swim the other day that she was a bit stiff in her shoulder, so we have also been giving her the metacam anti inflammatory meds, again something we keep in reserve.
Yesterday, she was in serious trouble, putting no weight on her right foot and in discomfort with her left shoulder. We kept her quiet for the day and she slept for most of it, but when moving, it was pitiful to see her in so much distress.
I rang the vet today and she was seen at 9.15 this morning.
He believes it is her arthritis and we are doing all the right things. We need to give her a full dose of the metacam for the next few days, but explained that in so doing, it knocks her out completely, and that the first time I gave her that dosage, I thought I’d killed her. We are therefore to give her a half dose for two days, then increase it to ¾ and then the full dose. We’ll see what happens on the three quarters dosage.
She is booked in for X-rays tomorrow to see how far the arthritis has progressed since last time, so for the remainder of the day will be in sleepy mode.
She’s out of it at the moment having had her breakfast when we got back (with metacam and glucosomine therein) with some grated cheese. She’s drinking OK and her toileting is normal, though in this heat, her appetite, like our own, is a bit hit and miss.
Poor love. She can’t tell us what’s wrong or where exactly it hurts, but we’re trying sweetheart.
Sweet Maggie. Sending positive energy and (wishfully) some cooler weather.
Thanks Kate.
We had a thunderstorm last night but it was still hot and sticky. Today isn’t too bad and she’s sleeping for most of it!
God love her. I hope she gets to feeling better!
Thank you. We think we may have found the problem with her foot and cut away some stiff and sharp fur between the pads.
I hope it helps!
We took a picture and will take it with us to the vet to ask them to check it out more thoroughly when she;s under.
Poor Maggie. And I’m also sorry for you. It is awful when our beloved fur babies are in pain. I hope the meds kick in quickly and she feels better soon.
Thanks Fransi.
Because she’s a bit dopey today, Hubby has managed to look at her foot properly and discovered some fur that was stiff and pointed. That has all now been cut away, the area cleansed and the antibiotic cream applied. Hopefully that will help as if she can put weight on her foot, she can reduce the strain on the opposite shoulder.
Between all the love and care I know she’ll be better soon.
We try and she can;t tell us, bless her. We like to think we know our dog, hence the concern over medication doses, but we never push it. She wanted to go for a walk this morning, so we did, at her pace, Exercise helps our stiffness in our joints, so hopefully this helped her too.
I’m sure it did and it’s great that she wanted to go.
That’s how I see it too.
Definitely. Really they are not so different from us. They have so many of the same ailments, and medications. I had a friend whose cat had a thyroid problem and whenever her husband would run out of his pills he’d take one of the cat’s. So if moving around helps our arthritic joints it makes perfect sense that it will help our dogs and cats too.
Glucosomine was suggested by another blogger and we tried it almost 2 years ago, It has helped, so I started taking a larger strength for my hands, and it worked for me too.
Yes, I know many people who take it as well and it works for all of them.
😀
YES I HATE THE HEAT AND TO THINK THEY WEAR A FUR COAT AND ARE LEFT IN PEOPLE’S CARS, MADNESS, CHINA
Maggie comes everywhere with us, but we will not leave her in the car and one of us either stays with her, or waits outside whatever shop the other has gone in. If we leave her at home, she tends to howl!

Thanks for the reblog.
How hot it has been, I bet she didn’t know where to put herself. Hope she feels comfortable soon and hopefully the weather will be cooler too.
She has been very restless in the heat.
I thought she would be. The heat has been so extreme.
To say today was cooler outside, inside my flat is hot, that I still feel the need to have my fan on.
I’m glad we have the ceiling fan in the bedroom now.
Yes, that will be nice.
Aww, poor girl.
She’s slept most of today.
Hope she gets better soon.
Us too. She’s settled for the night now, and I have a very warm hip!
👍
Maggie is in my prayers and you are also.I wish nothing but for the best for all of you. 🍀☕👵
Thank you so much Bettylouise.
She’s moving better today.
Thanks for letting me know.🍀☕👵
Hope she gets to feeling better soon!
Thank you. She wanted to go for a walk and we’ve just got back. Slow and ploddy, but we let her set the pace.
Arthritis is a miserable ailment that you can’t do much about really. You’re doing the right thing though, plenty of TLC…
Most definitely. 🙂

Thank you very much!
Bless her. The heat really gets to them … even my joints ache more in this hot weather than in winter.
She’s moving better today, but we think still in pain, so at least the X-rays will give us an idea of what the position is.
Ani and I are keeping our paws crossed for Maggie x
thanks Sue. Post to follow shortly
I’ll keep my eyes open.
Maggie knows she has loving and diligent owners, even if she can’t quite understand why she feels the way she does. It’s hell getting older.
For all of us!
