Thursday photo prompt: Aflame #writephoto

Once again Sue Vincent has given us one of her stunning pictures for her photo prompt.

For visually challenged writers, the image shows an empty landscape beneath a blue sky. Darkness gathers above the horizon and between land and cloud, the sky is aflame…
The crop in the field rustled, emulating a golden wave to a menacing shore.
Field mice, grasshoppers and ground nesting birds abandoned their homes as ants and worms weaved deeper below ground.
The horizon, once clear and a perfect blue, was now aflame under a purple cloud.
A careless cigarette or a discarded bottle together with the sun’s relentless heat over the last few weeks was thought to be to blame for setting the landscape on fire.
The authorities sent fire crews from every available source to try and contain the blaze, but with the wind, they soon lost control.
Sects and Cults got out their potions, lotions and spell books, chanting and dancing to entice rain to quell the furnace, all to no avail.
Properties were evacuated as a precautionary measure, emergency centres set up in nearby villages. The general public put together soup kitchens, clothing racks, blankets and toys for those who had lost everything, and pets were cared for.
In the face of disaster, Man had worked together, united rather than divided.
Sadly, it wouldn’t last and in the aftermath, the old faces of greed, prejudice and hostility soon raised their heads. That was something that would never change.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

We can live in hope and work for change…but I doubt it will be universal…

This scenario is very well possible. I hope it never comes to it.

  3. Michael says:

Human nature has a few fundamental flaws doesn’t it? Good piece Di, I like your response to the image.

    • The heathlands close to home were sometimes alight from discarded cigarettes, and on one occasion they had to evacuate homes as it raged close to the estate boundary. Most of it is built on now and the natural habitats long gone.

  4. Alas! We never learn, but then, that is no reason to give up hope 🙂
