It was another hot and oppressive night last night. Sadly Hubby’s plan with placing the fan in the hall on oscillate didn’t materialise as
1) there was no socket in close proximity,
2) the extension lead was snaking across vital points of access (ie. the loo door)
3) it was difficult to get past it to go anywhere.
We have therefore resorted to Plan B (how ironic this last line is)
In the cottage and our previous two homes we had ceiling fans in the lounge and major bedrooms. Even if we had them running all night they didn’t run up the electric bill, and the three of us weren’t chilled.
We’d priced them last year and were gobsmacked at the cost so ended up buying the free standing one that has now been replaced. I had that going last night for about an hour to cool Maggie down as well as having the windows open. She was extremely restless and Hubby let her out at 1am. She started to eat grass, so we thought uh-oh, she’s going to be poorly, but she came back to bed and I made sure the fan was blowing in her direction but not at her. She fell asleep until just after 5 and seems quite content this morning. It’s still muggy though, but rain is forecast for later.
Hubby got on the internet this morning and has found a ceiling fan that is not too expensive, so it is on order and we are awaiting confirmation of stock delivery. He’ll put it up in the main bedroom as we’ll still have the free standing one for the lounge if needed.
It’s a Plan…………….. and we all know what happens if we plan anything!
Fingers crossed that this plan works out as planned 🤞
we shall indeed see.
Uh oh! Hope it all works out Di
Just got a text, the fan is in and we can collect it tomorrow!
We have ac, but it only really helps in the living room. Our bedroom gets no cooling from it. We plug a box fan into the kitchen and put a fan in the hall. I went out and bought another fan and put it in the bedroom. We are both sensitive to heat sickness, especially at night. This morning, I closed off the bedrooms and tonight, we’ll sleep on the living room floor under the ac. Which is on, by the way, solely for the love of the cat. She’s 12 now, and even with the ac on she’s so uncomfortable. I fear she’s not going to make it through the summer. Hardly eats anything at all, she drinks lots of water though. Vet said it’s the heat, but I worry about her.
Oh, I am so sorry to read this. We have cool mats here in the UK for our pets. Would one of these help your cat? They come in various sizes and start around £20. We understand they are absolutely brilliant for pets suffering in the heat, but we haven’t got one for Maggie as it was beyond our budget because we’d need a big one so that she can fully stretch out.
I’ll swing by the pet store and see what they have. I bought her a small fan that goes just over her bed. I keep dropping ice into her water dish, but she is such a persnickity little thing.
Have you tried putting some of her favourite food in ice cubes? Monkey World did it with veg and garlic for the apes in the summer and they loved it.
She will only eat one brand of cat food… unfortunately, Purina discontinued it a few months ago. We’ve tried several different brands that look the same, but she knows. She won’t touch anything else. Even with vet giving her a stimulant, she’s just not adapting and is eating very little. I’ve even gone so far as to contact Purina and ask them where I can find what she eats. I fear she’s become anorexic. I do offer her cold snacks, I keep her favorite treat in the fridge, but she’s not even really eating much of that. The vet says there’s nothing physical wrong beyond being a senior kitty. Doing all we can to make her happy.
I was going to suggest contacting Purina. They are usually very good. You might also check out some local pet shops, they may have some stock for the short term anyway. At least there’s nothing physically wrong, bless her.
The vet even says “You can lead a horse to water…”…. sigh… just doing the best we can and praying a lot.
Sending positive thoughts your way. As long as she’s drinking though, that is half the battle. Maggie tends to lose her appetite when it’s really hot so like you we always make sure there’s plenty of fresh water available 24/7
Hope this one works out.
I hope you soon get your ceiling fan installed and can have a cooler night! 🙂
Fortunately for my dogs, they have all been OK in the heat (apart from the first who had the double coat, but I just took her in the pool, and then she was fine again.)
Little Monkey would bask in the full sun on the hottest of days! She Loved the heat. 😀
Barney liked to toast himself in the garden and would then roll over to toast the other side. I guess because Maggie’s mainly black and has the double collie coat, she’s finding it more. The fan has arrived and we shall pick it up tomorrow. Hurrah!
I see it is up and working! 😀
Bliss……………………..
