For visually challenged writers, the image shows a a view between two trees of a rapid river tumbling over stones beneath a bridge. The banks are lush and green, and the water is spanned by a simple arch of stone, all overgrown with a green carpet and shaded by trees.
She heard the cuckoo’s chorus echo in the trees. A sign of Spring and opportunity.
The water gently splashed against her ankles as she dipped her toes into the refreshing stream. Soon it would be dry and she’d be able to walk from one bank to the other without using the bridge.
Their names were still there, crudely carved beneath with ragged stones which they’d kept as a reminder of days long gone.
As kids, they had come here to play and cool off, later to fish with pins, bread and cotton, two innocents in tune with nature and each other.
As teens they’d argued and gone their separate ways only to meet up again some years later, realising how foolish they’d been and how much they had lost.
Their friendship never faltered after that. Both remained loyal to their partners until their passing, and in recent years they found the peace and solace true Soul Mates encounter and embrace.
She waded out to the centre of the stream, where the water swirled and danced in the sunlight, diamonds kissing her fingers as she touched the surface.
Gently she lifted the lid of her precious cargo and released it into the gathering ripples which welcomed them in anticipation.
They had loved it here, and it was only fitting that his ashes be scattered in this place as would hers when her time came.
A very touching story. ๐
It just spoke to me of peace and a final resting place.
Your story brought tears to my eyes.
I must have worded it just right then. Thank you.
You did!๐
Totally agree it does give the idea of peace, a beautiful interpretation of a wonderful photograph
thank you
Beautiful, heartwarming and aptly descriptive story. I especially liked the line, “She waded out to the centre of the stream, where the water swirled and danced in the sunlight, diamonds kissing her fingers as she touched the surface.”
Thank you. I’m glad you liked it.
How very beautiful, Di… and yes, it got me too.
Thanks Sue.
Struck a cord with me for many reasons…wonderful, thank you!
Thanks Donna

The ending was unexpected, coming as it did after describing all that peaceful beauty, but it felt right. The perfect resting place…
