Waits, waists and measures

I was given a couple of magazines the other week and finally got to look at them when Hubby was in hospital.
Both were to do with healthy living and eating, recommended diets (SW was not mentioned by the weigh way) and some scrummy looking pictures and recipes.
A guy I worked with once told me a few tips that photographers used to make food look extra delicious and attractive, so I wondered how many ‘dyes’ were added to the mix as opposed to ‘Di’s made’ which Hubby calls the meals I prepare.

Some of them were variations on meals I already cook, but one particular article was about weights and measures when you don’t have scales or other measuring devices to hand* (you’ll appreciate the pun later) and supposedly works for your size and shape.
Now for most of us reorganising our larders and revisiting our food education, the size and shape we are is not the size and shape we want to be, but it was interesting as things were measured by the size of your hands*.
I can’t remember the magazine as I rarely read any, so looked the subject up on the internet and found quite a variety, including this which could be useful to some of my readers depending on what kind of diet you’re following.
The one I tried today is not listed here, and that was to make an ‘OK’ sign with your forefinger and thumb and use it to measure stick spaghetti.
The spaghetti I buy is about a foot long and I always break it in half when I cook it (small saucepan), so if this size portion is sufficient for one person, all I can say is I’m glad I didn’t double it! Probably if my appetite is as it once was, maybe it was a good portion, but it was really too much for the two of us, let alone me, though we did eat it all so won’t have to worry for the rest of the day.
All pasta being one of the free foods with SW, measuring isn’t necessary, but it was definitely an interesting exercise, and I can use less than the ‘O’ as a guide now!

I am sticking with SW as their methods seem to suit me just now, but if this interests you for measuring food quantities, it might be worth checking out.

  1. Actually that chart is what my new diabetes ‘teacher’ used to show me portion sizes. I knew it, it’s just rare that I follow it. But it’s certainly good information to know.

    Interesting ways to measure things – tho the plan does seem a bit weird.
    I agree with you on the spaghetti amount – as that would be what I used to cook for 4 of us! – But maybe I just have long fingers! 😀

    I have always heard protein serving was a deck of cards. I like the hand palm better – your hand size is relative to your size, so it makes sense to me.
