A Bouquet for Me

It was the funeral today, and the weather could have been a little more sympathetic.
We decided to leave early so as not to get blocked in our drive and to find somewhere to park at the other end as we were unfamiliar with the layout of the Crem.

There was a lot of support today, faces I recognised but couldn’t exactly place, until I was approached at the wake with
‘I didn’t recognise you without the dog!’
and the mists began to clear.

It was a lovely personal service, celebrating the life of a man we didn’t know that well as we’ve been here less than two years, but could identify with what was being said. The order of service had two fabulous photographs of him which captured his essence, character, smile, his entire being.
I met some of the family as we queued for the buffet lunch, which catered for all tastes and my syn chart left the building. I’ve calculated it to be about 20 as I tried to be careful and hadn’t had anything in any of my boxes other than 1 syn for yoghurt on my fruit this morning and my 350ml of milk.

We left after a couple of hours and I was surprised to be given a beautiful bouquet of flowers for everything we’d done. I was overwhelmed as she had so much else to think about and so many other people to consider. They have pride of place on the table in the window.

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

  1. Sorry to hear of your sad day, but so pleased it ended on a pleasant note with your bouquet of flowers ❤

That’s so thoughtful of her. I am glad it went well.

What a thoughtful gesture. Of course you and your husband have really been there for her, but still, as you say, with so much else on her mind … It’s wonderful that there was a good turn-out — sounds like he got a well-deserved and lovely send-off.

    • Despite the rain, it has been a pleasant day. Everyone there has a happy memory of a man so full of life, he had time for everybody. Whenever I see novelty socks, I shall think of him because he had a grand selection of the minions, marvel superheros, disney characters and the muppets.

How lovely Di. Enjoy the flowers. Sounds like you were really appreciated. I will tell you one day about some flowers that I received unexpectedly, that made my day too. 😊

I’m glad you were able to be there – funerals are extremely difficult for me.

    • We are glad we were available to help her when he was taken into hospital that day. We’ve spoken to her this morning as her son and his family were leaving and they wanted to say goodbye. We are here if she needs us.

  7. How nice it was a very personalized service. Better than any elaborate event.
Small kindnesses.Being there when needed. The flowers and appreciation that she was able to give probably meant as much to her as to you.
