All the ‘1’s and a little story from me today
Today’s prompt: bride, lunch, ventriloquist
The wedding had gone off without a hitch and they were now sitting down at the reception.
The bride sat next to her groom blushing prettily, Rob as Best Man flanked him on the other side but it was the Mother In Law that was the fly in the ointment and likely to spoil the day. He knew she didn’t approve of their union, but his friend loved Rosanne and would give her everything in his power. His surprise would be put into action shortly.
Lunch was served, and not even the Old Bag could complain. Everything was cooked to perfection, wines perfectly chilled, even the kids menu went down well with harassed parents.
Speeches and toasts were announced to follow potty breaks for old and young alike and he watched as MIL was getting excited at saying her piece.
The happy couple smiled and grinned at each other, holding hands and doing all the lovey dovey things newlyweds do in front of an audience.
As Richard stood to thank everyone for coming, the cards and presents, and how beautiful his new wife looked, MIL shuffled in her seat, edging towards the microphone in front of her.
Richard sat down to a round of applause as she got to her feet.
Her voice filtered across the room as she gushed about how wonderful Richard was going to be as a son-in-law, how she would help them in every way she could, starting with a gift of a thousand pounds towards furniture for their new home and donating the use of her Range Rover should they require it.
Her face flushed crimson as none of those words had passed her lips, yet the more she flustered, the more generous her offers became. Rob gestured for her to sit before she had a coronary and before she discovered her microphone cable had been severed.
He then continued with his duties as best man, thanking the bridesmaids and sharing jokes and witticisms of he and Richard at college before the final toasts, then finishing by producing a ventriloquist dummy from under his seat and giving a rousing rendition of Love Changes Everything.
MIL sat quietly in her seat basking in the praise and acknowledgment of her ‘kindness’, and it wasn’t as if she couldn’t afford it. Rob looked at her across the rim of his champagne glass and winked. She found herself actually smiling at the cheeky rogue!
