Genre Writing Challenge April 10

Today’s genre and image: Dark Fantasy (tales that focus on the nightmarish underbelly of magic, venturing into the violence of horror novels)

They wanted me to sit for a portrait before my initiation.
No cameras or mirrors are allowed here, but I don’t mind that. For years I had been hounded about not being beautiful, that I didn’t belong. I was an outcast within my own family, the black sheep, the one who wanted to go it alone.
So here I am.
It’s not that bad though. I’m amongst friends insomuch as we all had that rejective start to life, shunned by others because we didn’t conform to their ways.

The hallways are lined with portraits of my new family. Some are old, but many are young, like me. The thing is, nobody dies. I’m only nineteen, but my world is about to change, and for eternity after today I will not. Well not on the outside anyway.
I’m told the pain doesn’t last and is replaced by something euphoric. I’m not afraid.
See those wings?
They’re not mine, but belong to the lover to whom I am to surrender my virtue.
Hopefully I will get to have a set just like them.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
