Saturday Mix – Sound Bite, 16 March 2019

For Sarah’s Saturday Mix challenge this week we are hearing things as we explore the use of ONOMATOPOEIA. You will need to use the THREE onomatopoeic words in your response – which can be poetry or prose.
Our three words, using onomatopoeia are:

  • jangle
  • ooze
  • squelch

The jangle of the overhead door bell jarred Esme awake. Thursday afternoons were normally quiet and she could doze in the back office of the second hand shop she helped out at in the holidays. Obviously not today.
It was chucking it down outside and people had been coming in to get out of the rain, though not necessarily to buy.
Each time, she put on her friendliest face and brightest smile in the hope of making a sale. She had to stifle a laugh as a rather buxom woman oozing Chanel and dripping jewellery squelched her way up to the counter.
‘I wonder if you can help me dear,’ she said. ‘I’m after some galoshes to wear over my shoes. Always loved to splash in puddles as a kid, but somehow it doesn’t seem right in Jimmy Choos.’
‘I don’t think we have galoshes, but….. ‘ turning round to rummage in the box behind her,  ‘we do have these………’  and with a flourish, Esme produced a pair of waders.
The woman’s blood pressure rocketed with pleasure.
‘Perfect!’ she cried. ‘Where can I try them on?’

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
