For Barney

This is my contribution for Bee’s challenge

I love Il Divo and had just bought their first album.
This was one of the tracks, and was actually playing on the radio when we got the phone call calling us back to the vet’s surgery on March 5th 2005.
Barney had slipped a disc that morning which had nipped his spinal cord and he was paralysed. We were faced with a decision we weren’t ready for, but had to put his quality of life first.

This is a beautiful love ballad. It has everything, harmonies, strings, and the guys are nice to look at too.
I couldn’t listen to it or the album for years afterwards, even though we’d got Maggie 6 days later.
Even now, almost 14 years later, it still hurts to think about that day and I think of our Beautiful Boy every time I hear this.

I used to think that I was strong
I realize now I was wrong
‘Cause every time I see your face
My mind becomes an empty space
And with you lying next to me
Feels like I can hardly breathe

I close my eyes
The moment I surrender to you
Let love be blind
Innocent and tenderly true
So lead me through tonight
But please turn out the light
‘Cause I’m lost every time I look at you

And in the morning when you go
Wake me gently so I will know
That loving you was not a dream
And whisper what it means to be
Then every moment we’re apart
Will be a lifetime to my heart

I close my eyes
The moment I surrender to you
Let love be blind
Innocent and tenderly true
So lead me through tonight
But please, please turn out the light
‘Cause I’m lost every time I look at you
I’m lost, every time I look at you

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

aw how heartwarming and it tugs at your heart

    • We weren’t ready. When we took Maggie for her ssecond lot of jabs, we saw the vet who had taken such good care of Barney. He said he was glad we’d got another dog, adding that he couldn’t tell us at the time, but we had made the right decision. It helped, but didn’t take the hurt away.

  2. I don’t think pets are supposed to become your children but they always do.

  3. Just beautiful. Gave me a few tears…

It’s heart breaking to lose a pet no matter if you are prepared or not. I got quite attached to a hamster I had. She got cancer just before I moved to the UK and I stayed with her until she passed over at the vets. Now such a small creature us no comparison to a dog but I still cried my eyes out. May Barny rest in peace and Maggie be with you for a long time! Thanks for taking part πŸ˜—
