Frank’s challenge this week:
For this week, he thought it might be fun to go with a theme that allows us to go to any level that we like: Surface!
Photo: Dawn off our bow April 2017
Photo: across from our berth February 2017
Both days, the marina surface was like a mill-pond, with boats and sky reflected perfectly.
The other basin was in the midst of its revamp and residents there had been put in with ours. The photo below was taken in December 2016.
On some mornings, the water was so clear we could see huge mirror carp as well as the smaller fish swimming below us. It was also fascinating watching the heron biding his time to strike, and he never missed!
Photo: June 2015.
Under the surface of a different kind, there was a lot of speculation and rumours buzzing around at the time we left, some of which have come to fruition.

About pensitivity101
I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes!
We have recently lost our beloved dog Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney, and now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of my GSD so had hers done too.
From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives.
We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
Kinda makes me wish for a boat home.
It was a lovely life and we enjoyed our three years. There’s plenty of posts about it here, especially our final trip, with loads of pictures.
I love any pics/post reminding me of our narrowboating experience.
We miss it, but it has become too expensive to live in a residential mooring now,
Everything fun gets priced out of sight.
Price increase of 12% for residents this year.
Awful! And completely unwarranted.
Exactly. When we left, we’d just had a hike of 44% on the river licence (it hadn;t gone up in 20 years) and our mooring fees were due to increase by 27% in the August. I don’t know what the increase was for residents last year, but 12% this year is a rip off and totally unfair as the facilities are dated, badly maintained and inadequate . Apparently work has finally started on the shower block so ladies and gents are sharing the same side (it is already divided into two anyway) and the excuse for the hike is to cover the cost. Yeah right.
Seems like a vicious circle. Prices are put up ridiculously. There is a steady decline in users. Thus it is maintained that upkeep/expansion of the waterways is unwarranted, and they go downhill — and not just via locks. Thus the deteriorating amenities receive less patronage, but to maintain previous levels of income prices go up. And so on.
fact of life unfortunately.
It looks so tempting to live on a boat. I am sure there would be a down side but looks so inviting.
We loved it, and would robably still be on it if it hadn’t been for health issues and rising costs. We could have found alternative moorings, but they weren’t residential, and that is a problem as you have to have an address for TPTB. Box numbers at a post office aren’t acceptable.
The down side of it. I see that you had to move to terra firma.
It was great while it lasted and were glad to have been part of it. We’re doing OK here, and feel we were right to move on when we did
The main point is to be healthy and happy.
