Sunday Photo Fiction – February 10, 2019

Thanks to Susan for hosting another Sunday Photo Fiction Challenge.

This week’s photo is courtesy of first-time photo contributor Subramanya Bhat.

She saw the little boat and her eyes filled with tears.
Where had it come from? It wasn’t damaged for it to have been out in the rain.
Bending down to pick it up, she saw her reflection in the water.
Where had the years gone?
When had she got to look so old?
Her hands trembled, the fingers bony and distorted, making her grasp difficult.
She clutched the precious paper to her heart.
It was made just as she remembered, folds upon folds sometimes used as a cup, but more often a boat to sail downstream or under bridges all those years ago.
It felt warm in her palm, as if it had a heart of its own and was soothing her sorrow.
She let the tears flow.
She felt a hand in hers, turned and lifted her face towards that familiar smile.
It wasn’t there, but the hand so tiny in hers made her look down.
Big blue eyes gazed up at her.
‘That man showed me how to make the boat Nanna,’ she said. ‘He said it would make you happy.’
She looked across to where her grand-daughter pointed.
A mist was slowly dispersing.
She smiled.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! We have an elderly dog called Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.

One reflection in clear water brought back so many memories and brought reassurance someone is always with her.

Your use of the boat as also a cup took me back. To a time when folding paper was one of my interests, lovely…

  3. John Yeo says:

A story that had me transfixed with reminiscences of my past. Lovely. 😊
