First Line Friday: November 23th, 2018

Over to Dylan this week for our First Line Friday challenge.

Your line for this week is:

This was by far, the bleakest and blackest of Fridays.

The Mall should have been full of excited shoppers looking for a bargain, but numbers and profits were down 20% on last year.
Suddenly, everything came to a standstill when the power went out.
Lifts stalled, escalators juddered to a halt, and cash registers failed to Ca-ching with the much needed sales.
The emergency lights came on and people started to push and shove their way to the exits, many taking full advantage of the chaos and grabbing a handful of garments or other merchandise from displays in the hope to abscond without paying.
Security tags for unpaid items set off alarm systems and all doors automatically sealed. Instead of Jingle Bells, a warning came over the loudspeakers:
‘If you do not return or pay for any pilfered goods, each will self destruct and the Mall will not be held accountable for your injuries. You have two minutes to comply.’
‘Rudolph’ on the walkway above started to glow from within, the red underbelly homing in on the culprits trying to shoplift.
People gave them a wide berth,  providing them with a clear passage back into the shops concerned for the tags to be disabled and the goods paid for.

The shop managers counted their takings and were exultant.
‘Our best year so far!’ said one.
‘Good job no-one called our bluff.’ said another.
‘Too much telly and techno-bashing.’ said a third.
‘Wonderful what a few lasers on a timer can do, isn’t it.’
They all laughed. Things weren’t so bleak after all.

About pensitivity101

I am a retired number cruncher with a vivid imagination and wacky sense of humour which extends to short stories and poetry. I love to cook and am a bit of a dog whisperer as I get on better with them than people sometimes! In November 2020, we lost our beloved Maggie who adopted us as a 7 week old pup in March 2005. We decided to have a photo put on canvas as we had for her predecessor Barney. We now have three pictures of our fur babies on the wall as we found a snapshot of Kizzy, my GSD when Hubby and I first met so had hers done too. On February 24th 2022 we were blessed to find Maya, a 13 week old GSD pup who has made her own place in our hearts. You can follow our training methods, photos and her growth in my blog posts. From 2014 to 2017 'Home' was a 41 foot narrow boat where we made strong friendships both on and off the water. We were close to nature enjoying swan and duck families for neighbours, and it was a fascinating chapter in our lives. We now reside in a small bungalow on the Lincolnshire coast where we have forged new friendships and interests.
