I love the Autumn. The golds, reds, browns and russets are warm and inviting, so is it no wonder I liked this photograph in Teresa’s Writing Challenge today?
Come walk with me
Through this golden land,
Share the sights and sounds of
Nature at its most glorious
As she sheds her colours and lays her
Limbs to rest.
Dare we tread in this leafy glade,
Our footsteps crisp on Her discarded cloak,
A scurrying in the undergrowth
Suggests ones scavenging
For winter warmth.
The misty glow through the branches
Entices walkers such as me,
The hewn trunks lie dormant and bare,
Fun for Maggie to climb,
Just because they are there.
The wood echoes with birdsong,
Crystal and clear,
A robin, blackbird and thrush
All are here
Singing their melody that hangs
On the breeze
As they hide, nest and flutter
Above in the trees.
We retrace our steps as night falls,
The Autumn chill teasing our bones.
Never silent or empty
The woodlands watch our retreat,
They will come alive
In our absence.
